Why Homeschool?: Family Time

Another one of the many reasons I homeschool is family time. I use this term in more than one way. First I love my son and love to spend time with him. Homeschooling allows me time with my son I wouldn’t otherwise have if he went to public school. Second homeschooling allows us to spend more time with our family as a whole. One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone says “I couldn’t stand to spend that much time with my children.” It makes me even more upset when they say this in front of their children. First … Continue reading

Why Homeschool?: Public Schools Have No Obligation to Educate

In 2000 it became official. Public schools are under no obligation to educate public school students. Denver Parents Association brought a lawsuit against Denver Board of Education and its superintendent for breach of contract. They were not suing for monetary gain, but for changes to be brought about and remedy the situation. The court decided that because it is a public school, it had no contract with any of the parents and therefore could not breach a contract where one does not exist. I read about this case way back when I first started to really research homeschooling and it … Continue reading

Why Homeschool?: Personalization

One of my favorite things about homeschooling is the ability to personalize everything for Jonathan. I can personalize his curriculum to his learning style. I can personalize my teaching style and methods. I can personalize his schedule. I can personalize everything. As I said before, Jonathan is a very kinesthetic and tactile learner. He needs to have movement involved in his school activities. He needs a lot of hands on activities. Instead of being packed in a room feeling like a sardine 7 hours a day, he spends his entire day doing science experiments, playing with manipulatives, cooking dishes or … Continue reading

Why Homeschool?: Energy Level

If I was ever asked to describe my son in two words or less, I would say “pure energy.” I once had a mom with twins tell me she felt sorry for me. Jonathan’s energy is one of the many reasons I chose to homeschool. That statement may not make sense right off the bat, but let me explain. If Jonathan went to public school, I am sure he would be diagnosed with ADHD. If that were the case, I would be pressured to put him on drugs to help with that. If I were to diagnose him, I would … Continue reading

What Do We Have in Common?

Perhaps it’s just been my experience, but I’ve noticed that homeschool parents and public school parents seem inclined to think of the differences between themselves rather than their similarities. This can lead to feelings of “us” and “them,” and inhibits us from making close friendships with those around us who might have chosen a different educational philosophy. I’d like to take a minute to focus on the things we have in common. 1. We love our children immensely. Regardless of where our children go to school, we love them with all our hearts and we feel responsible for them and … Continue reading

“That’s a Big Responsibility.”

During an interview for an assistant teacher position that I was applying for, they asked which school my son went to. When I told them I homeschool my son, one of the interviewer’s response was “Wow, that’s a big responsibility.” Being that I really did want this job for experience for when I finish my K-8 BA, I let it slide and agreed that indeed, it is a big responsibility. By the end of the interview I already knew I was not going to get the job. Why? The fact that the conversation led back to my homeschooling several times … Continue reading

Single Parenting Perks

I agree with Kori when she says being a single parent isn’t easy; I also agree that there are a lot of things about being a single parent that make up for it. I just wanted to add a few things to her list that I love about being a single parent. I like that I get to make all of our decisions. I don’t have to check with someone when I make a decision about my son or us as a family. I have family and friends that I can talk it over with and bounce ideas off of, … Continue reading
