When the Kids Teach the Teacher

As homeschool moms we used to wearing the teacher hat. We think mostly in terms of what we teach our children. However, we are uniquely positioned to be equally taught by our children. Each of our children has a lesson for us to learn that is vitally important to our personal growth. That is the honor and blessing of being a mom and homeschooler.

I posed the question "What have your kids taught you?" to my lovely community on Facebook. I found the responses to be quite beautiful and I could relate to much of what was said. Here is a sampling. Perhaps you can see yourself in some of these responses.

More than I ever wanted to know about the things the Lord is changing in me.

They have taught me to be more patient by teaching them in different ways!

Grace

Patience, by handling their siblings with patience.

That what I DO speaks louder than what I say!

Patience, understanding, communication, and obedience to God.

To say "I'm sorry" quickly and without sarcasm.

How desperately needy I have to remain before the Lord. It is a moment by moment looking to Him

To be fair. Teenagers especially have a strong desire for fairness and justice. I double check myself and try and make sure I am not just being mean for mean's sake, but have a real concern...

They taught me what loving unconditionally really means. The moment I set eyes on each of my kids, I just loved them to pieces and it has only grown each day.

That I CAN homeschool!

That every child is unique. You cannot home school them all the same with the same results. We fared much better when I learned that and adjusted my curriculum and paced the day according to their individual needs.

Not to judge other families kids

They have taught me that what I say & do is so important. They look to me as an example and when I am empty and lose my tree (lose my patience/peace/fruit) they tend to as well.
