Unexpected Homeschooling Resources: You Tube

Knowing that the internet is the single most important homeschooling resource ever, it dawned on me to point that out to my readers. After all, you would not be reading this right now without the internet. You would not have access to the Homeschooling at a Glance outline, you would not be able to communicate with other homeschoolers, and you would not be able to use interactive games and learning materials.

After thinking about this point for a minute, I remembered my favorite homeschool resource online. You are never going to believe it. It is You Tube. I went ahead and linked you to the search for educational videos. You can get historical videos as well. Before you get too excited, you need to know that you have to heavily moderate the use of You Tube. Do not just give them these links. Instead, what I like to do is search for videos that relate to what they are studying and send them the links. Then I tell them to go to their inbox, click, and watch. (When choosing links to send your kids, look on the related links on the right to make sure they are not inappropriate or distracting).

This year, on You Tube, my kids have watched Presidential biographies, The History of Television, the first motion picture ever and more. You have access to everything from fraction lessons to movies on the Japanese Occupation. With careful planning, you might even be able to solely homeschool on You Tube... though searching for the right materials would have to be your only hobby.

If You Tube is not your thing, consider using the Discovery Channel and Discovery Channel online for educational videos. You can also purchase historical videos on Amazon.com.
