Understanding Charlotte Mason Vocabulary N-P

In previous posts, I and other homeschool bloggers here at families.com have discussed our experiences with charlotte mason curriculum. In my last post, I supplied Charlotte Mason Vocabulary for the letters A - B, C-E, F-H and I-M. In this installment, I will discuss N-P.

Narration: Narration is a very important part of Charlotte Mason approach. The goal is in training the child to spontaneously discuss what he or she has learned. The practice of narration is to have a child write down a summation of what they have read.

Nature: Nature is very important in Charlotte Mason Education. Students are to go on nature walks observing and collecting specimens. They will also take nature notebooks to with them to record, sketch, and identify what they find. Studying nature in this way teaches the child the true Scientific Method in a way that is interesting and engaging.

Person: In the Charlotte Mason approach, the child is seen as a complete person and is given respect that a person should have. Therefore, a child's education should be based on his own capacity and needs and not what society dictates.

Picture Study: As discussed in "Art", from the age of six, a child would study world famous artists. They would study each piece done by that artist in the process. The children also read biographies of the painters, and compare the styles of one artist to another.

PNEU: You will hear a lot about PNEU schools when studying Charlotte Mason. PNEU is an acronym for Parents' National Education Union. This is the organization that Charlotte Mason worked with and through in developing her approach to education.
