What is the Best Way to Learn a Language?

One of my hobbies these days is the invention of a school. We’ve had some discussion about providing a session a week in another language. The question is, how would we teach that language to children? There are many philosophies about language learning. I live in Canada, and we have successful French immersion programs in schools. I didn’t attend one, and my daughter is not attending the one in our area. I love the idea as a concept. The teacher speaks in French and the children have to learn how to navigate in another language. Intense, but it works. However, … Continue reading

Shaping a Hybrid Homelearning Experience

I’d like to introduce myself – here is a virtual handshake for you! I’m the mom of our lovely just-turned-five-year-old, and we’re embarking on our educational journey. Yes, I realize that learning starts from birth, and that’s one of the reasons that I want to continue the life that we’ve led so far. I love spending time with my daughter and she is somewhat of an introvert. Home and family are our safe and happy places. While we live next door to a school and may yet attend it in the future, we’re one of those new families who is … Continue reading

In a Rush to Graduate Your Kids from Homeschool?

My family had a conversation last night about when we would graduate the kids from homeschool. We started talking about SAT scores for my son that we should receive on Tuesday and the fact that we couldn’t graduate him next year if he took the PSAT and qualified for the National Merit Program (he took the SAT first as a practice for the PSAT). Because the PSAT had to be taken in your Jr. year to qualify for the National Merit program, we were trying to figure out if he had to wait another year to graduate even though he … Continue reading

Welcome to the November 17, 2009 edition of carnival of educators. This is the fourth edition of the Carnival of Educators. For those new to carnivals, they are basically blog or column posts that include links to tidbits from dozens of other carnivals. Each week the carnival is hosted at a different blog to spread the wealth and the work around. This weeks edition is the Drama Club edition. In the past two weeks, I have been to numerous homeschool and school productions, and my own kids are in the middle of Tech week for a play scheduled for five … Continue reading

Don’t use credit cards, but still take loans?

A blog called I’ve paid for this twice already explains that anything purchased with credit cards is paid for again in interests, and maybe multiple times by the time the credit is paid off. Many of use have realized this and stopped using credit cards, but how many of us still take out loans and buy items on credit. Any kid on non-secured debt sucks extra money out of your pocket. Furniture loans, are financed by the stores and often through high risk programs that charge 10% or more interest for the honor of buying a sofa or entertainment center. … Continue reading

Keeping your homeschoolers learning all summer

I think I have finally found the real key to keeping homeschoolers learning all summer… it must be their idea. Summer is coming up quickly and for many, funds are still low as the country attempts to climb out of the housing crisis and unofficial recession. This kind of puts space camps, sports camps, and expensive computer programming sessions out of reach this summer. Just because funds are low, however, does not mean that homeschoolers need to end up having an unproductive summer. After a talk with my son about what to do this summer, we made the decision that this might … Continue reading

Yes, Its time to plan for next year again

Every spring, I depress other homeschoolers by beginning my planning for the next year. It might seem a bit early to many, but if you plan on using any outside classes or programs, they are registering now. If you plan to include drama or perhaps and Algebra course into your homeschooling plan, you don’t want to find that the classes are already full when you get to it. Anyway, we are pretty planned out for the year. We are using our usual fine arts program (Now called Artios Academy). Both of my kids are taking the Conservatory program which is … Continue reading

Is your homeschoolers plate too full?

I sat down and counted all of the activities my homeschoolers were in this year and realized that their plates just might be too full. Looking at my son’s schedule, I counted Drama club, Chorus, Introduction to Drama Class, Piano Lessons, Music Theory Class, Worldview class, and Avid Editing. That is just on Monday. On Thursdays he takes, Geometry, Spanish, History, Physical Science, and Language Arts. He also takes Fencing class once or twice a week. Holy Moly… That is 13 different classes. Technically 3 of them are clubs, but you get the picture. That is a lot of pressure … Continue reading

Do You Have a High School Graduation Plan?

I spent the bulk of this morning mapping out a plan for the rest of my son’s high school. In looking at what he has done so far, I have realized that his transcript is very elective heavy, but he is still on track to graduate at the end of his 1lth grade year if he wishes, or his 12 grade year which is what I would prefer. I found a 4-year high school plan template at HSLDA to download and started plugging in his completed classes. Because he started taking High School classes in the 8th grade, he will … Continue reading

Finding the Curriculum You Need At a Price You Can Afford

If you are like me, you have a list of curriculum needs for the upcoming year. You may also be realizing how much these curriculums will cost if you purchase them at full retail price. While I recommend purchasing a few curriculums each year at full price to keep the companies in business, it is not always possible to buy everything new. My biggest and most expensive needs are a Geometry curriculum, a Spanish curriculum, and a Pre-Algebra curriculum. Yes. Teens and tweens are expensive! For the curriculums I need for my kids, at full retail, these three items will … Continue reading
