Spin to Win on the Airborne Facebook Page

It is the time of year when the weather is changing from Winter to Spring. This seems to be when a lot of people catch colds. Airborne might be useful. They have a “Spin to Win” game on their Facebook page. It might be something fun to do while you are recovering from a cold. I have been incredibly sick this week. The winds here in California tend to kick up a lot of dust, and other particulate matter. This does not help the sinuses of severely allergic people, like me. I guess, technically, I don’t have a cold, but … Continue reading

Who Gets Custody

Do you know what the custody laws are in your state? I didn’t know when I got divorced. My attorney drew up everything and I signed it. Fortunately he was on my side and the custody was in my best interests. I didn’t give the laws much thought but read recently that here in Utah they are trying to have a statement added to our divorce statute saying that the court may not discriminate against a parent based on age, race, color, national origin, religious preference or gender. Really? In 2012 we are having to add this to our law? … Continue reading

Achieving Abstract Images

Now that you know how to snap shots of waterfalls to make them look as though cascades of cottony streaks are flowing over rocks, let’s turn our attention to techniques that allow you to achieve other abstract images. As I mentioned in a previous blog, long shutter speeds allow for intentional blurring, which in most cases, help to enhance images. The same blurring technique can also be used to experiment with more abstract photos, provided you make a few minor modifications. Rather than simply increasing the shutter speed, consider adjusting your camera’s zoom as well. By using a long shutter … Continue reading

Creating a Holiday Planner – Part 1

There are so many preparations that have to be made in the home with the upcoming holidays. There is baking to be done, rooms to decorate, parties and get-togethers to plan, presents to buy…all of it can quickly start to feel very overwhelming. Several years ago I designed a “Holiday Planner,” which was a great way to lay out everything that needed to be done. It helped me to prioritize, plan and prepare. It also enabled me to schedule when I would get it all done. Without a plan, you often find yourself trying to accomplish things last minute or … Continue reading

Get Ready for Kindergarten

Now, that my daughter is in preschool, kindergarten seems years away. But, in reality, it is only a few months down the road. This will be my first child entering Kindergarten, so I didn’t know much about the process of getting her enrolled for school. After talking to a friend yesterday, I had a little panic session. I live in an open-enrollment school district, meaning that I can apply to enroll her into any kindergarten classroom in the school district. Preferential treatment is always given to people living within a school’s boundaries, but it does leave some room for some … Continue reading

Can You Take Constructive Criticism?

Can you take constructive criticism? I have to admit that for a long time I really battled with this. In fact, when I first started writing for Families I really struggled with the initial editing process I had to go through. Yet I have quickly realized the teachable moments that are found in constructive criticism. If you can’t take constructive criticism and I am referring to your career here, then it means that you believe you have “arrived.” You are at the place you need to be and there is no room for improvement. You cannot grow in your work … Continue reading

Dina Lohan Sounds Off on Daughter Lindsay

What chance does a wayward child star have when his or her mother is seemingly delusional? In case you’ve missed it, Lindsay Lohan has been on a downward spiral in the most Britney Spears type of way. Lohan was Miley Cyrus before Miley Cyrus was Miley Cyrus. After a stint as a successful child model, Lohan starred in 1998’s Parent Trap and won the Young Artist Award and became a darling of Disney. Disney signed her to three more films and respected film critic Roger Ebert said Lohan had a “Jodie Foster sort of seriousness and intent focus” about her. … Continue reading
