September is Apple Orchard Time!

September is a great month to visit the apple orchard. How I love the smell of autumn in the air and the crinkling of the leaves as I walk through the apple orchard with my kids. After a fun afternoon of picking the best apples we head over to feed the goats in the barn. Then we are off to get some fresh apple cider and donuts to finish off the day. It’s a very relaxing and stress free experience we all enjoy. Spending this stress free time together is healthy and brings us closer together. Memories of children who … Continue reading

Things Homeschoolers can do in September

September is a great time to go to the beach as it is not too cold to enjoy the water, but the crowds are gone. Children collect shells and where they came from. They can lean about the tide, they can also learn about beach and water safety. Learn about labor day. For many kids labor day is just a day off of school, or a signal that school is about to start. Homeschoolers should understand that it was founded to celebrate the social and economic achievements of American Workers. Teach them what that means as well as how the … Continue reading

Why Field Trips?

September is rapidly flowing away from me, and with it the potential to do September-ish things like field trips to the apple farm. We had visitors most of September and a death in the family, so we spent most of September otherwise engaged. When I look at my calendar for the fall, I see great field trip ideas. I’m hoping to do some of them this week, when our world starts to get into its new normal routine. Why go on a field trip? First, it gets you out of your house and out of your normal routine. Now that … Continue reading

Using Newspapers and Magazines for Fun Learning

Making use of things around the house for learning inspires creativity for both the teacher and student. It is also a way to develop a lifelong learner as all surroundings will teach lessons and inspire thought. Being resourceful also saves your pocketbook from losing too much valuable weight. Old newspapers, magazines and even phone books can be used for such purposes. Before you throw your old publications in the recycle bin think about recycling them into educational tools. Here are ways to squeeze some fun learning out of the Sunday paper: Letter Hunt. Give your child a highlighter, pencil or … Continue reading

5 Tricks I Use to ‘Make It Work’

I recently wrote a blog in baby where I answered the question that seems to be on inquiring minds: “Just How Do You Do It?” I realize that many of you know this, but by way of introduction for those who are new, I have five children ages 8, 6, 4 and 2 year old twins. I homeschool the oldest two who are in 3rd and 1st grade respectively. My four year old does some version of preschool (although I should note that she just turned 4 a week ago). A commenter on the aforementioned blog asked how I got … Continue reading

Homeschooling in New Mexico

To all of our regular readers: In August of this year, I picked up where others had left off–and started work to include all of the state regulations into our home schooling blog here at families.com. In the interest of another project I’m working on for the first of the year, I have decided to conclude the rest of the year with blogs about home schooling laws in the rest of the states I haven’t covered. So I hope you’ll pardon the “contruction” and keep reading! You will definitely see more Homeschoolers’ Advent ideas, and I know Andrea is working … Continue reading

Parenting Gone Wrong–An Answer for Kaye

For those of you who are just jumping in, you may want to take a moment and peruse the other blogs in this discussion between Kaye, one of our education bloggers, and I. I have listed them at the bottom of this blog. Kaye poses some good questions regarding home schooling. She has a neighbor, who it seems, may not be the next poster child for HSLDA. He doesn’t seem to know what he should at his age, he’s out when it seems he should be home schooling, and his behavior is less than ideal. Kaye wonders, like so many … Continue reading

Parents: Considering Homeschooling?

It’s that time of year. Parents are wrapping up another school year with their kids. Hopefully this was a fantastic year but sometimes parents are faced with the challenge of making difficult educational decisions for their children’s future school career. Perhaps your child is struggling to keep up. Perhaps the social experience of school was painful and difficult for your child. Perhaps your child has shown gifts that their current school is not prepared to support. Maybe your child has been diagnosed with a learning disability or ADHD and you question the diagnosis or the treatment. There are many situations … Continue reading
