The Week In Review: October 28, 2006

Here we are again at the end of another week. I am sitting here, reviewing our week glowing with pride. Not because I wrote great articles, or because my children did something great but because I remembered to set the clocks back! So to all of you who are equally absent minded--go set your clocks back an hour and then come back and see what we did this week!

When your homeschooling statue law says that you are required to teach a comparable curriculum to "that of the public schools." Do you know what that means? Well, you likely know that you're supposed to at least teach what the public schools are teaching but do you know what that is? To address this issue, we have been going over bit by bit what your kids should know. This week we focused on kindergarten discussing what your kindergartner should know in social studies, science and language arts. Look soon for articles on health and safety as well as math for kindergartners.

Did you know Consitution Day was last month? Did you celebrate it? Well thanks to Tristi Pinkston, we got a run down of the forming of the U.S. Constution in her blog, Commemorating the Constitution: Attention Utah Residents. I have to admit that after reading her blog I'm kind of jealous. Apparently in Utah you can go and see a printing press that is a replica of the kind that was used to print the Declaration of Independence.

If you're looking for a way to improve your child's math skills, check out Tristi's blog on Cuisenaire Rods. She does a fantastic job explaining what they are and how they work to help your kids build valuable math skills! If you don't have a box, I highly recommend picking them up.

Finally, Tristi graces us again with a commentary on whether or not Homeschoolers Can Go to College. If you've been homeschooling for any length of time, you've likely been asked that question or other silly questions. In any case, homeschoolers can and do go to college and they are thriving.

A big thanks to Tristi for helping out this week as a guest blogger in Homeschool!

Valorie, you are amazing. I believe YOUR children will not only go to college but will be very sound minded, rounded, holistic people and contribute well within the communities in which they live in years to come. Sue B.
