Learning Unit – Japan and Natural Disasters

We have all watched the news reports from Japan with horror and sadness. Some of us have children old enough to understand the ramifications, and some of us have children too young to comprehend. I suggest using this monumental event in our world’s history as a study unit in our homeschools. Geography –pull out maps or our globe and discuss where Japan is, what its major cities are, and learn what other countries surround it. Social Studies – learn about the culture of Japan and what makes it such a strong, proud country. Learn to make some traditional Japanese dishes … Continue reading

Loving the Hair Song

If you have a Sesame Street fan in your home, or even if you don’t, you’ve probably heard the hoopla surrounding the latest Muppet hit: “I Love My Hair.” The superdooperschmooper cute music video went viral after it debuted on Sesame Street earlier this month. Now all I hear All.Day.Long. is my 6-year-old begging to watch and re-watch, and re-watch the skit that features an adorable brown puppet singing her heart out about the versatility of her tresses. The video was inspired by Sesame Street’s head writer and puppeteer Joey Mazzarino, who is a dad to a 5-year-old daughter with … Continue reading

Learning about Coping Gracefully from My Pets

Over in Marriage I wrote about how this year has been one blow after the other and I feel like I’m living under a black cloud. A string of them to be exact. No sooner does one pass than another one moves in and pours on me some more. I don’t even get a chance to fully dry off. I’ve been trying to cope as well as I can, but I have to be honest. My defenses are wearing down. Yesterday I got another blow. My dad’s girlfriend called to say she was at St. Anthony’s with my dad. He … Continue reading

Mini Bible Lesson: Long-Suffering

According to Webster’s Dictionary the first known use of the word longsuffering was in 1535.  Today the word is rarely used and mostly misunderstood.  Many believe it is interchangeable with with patience.  While the definitions are similar the distinction is very important. To understand the difference we need to find the biblical definition.  You see it is possible to be patient and not longsuffering.  We must examine this further to know how to walk in the spirit. Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;   ~Col. 1:11 As you can see from … Continue reading

My Favorite Conference Talk

It seems like whenever I listen to conference twice a year, and think about what I want to share on this blog, that I am always drawn to choose talks that are my “favorite” based on what I must need to learn or hear at the time. It is a blessing to me to have this avenue to re-read the conference talks and share my thoughts on them with whoever is reading. Maybe your favorite was not my favorite. It doesn’t really matter, because they are all inspired. But, I want to share a talk with you that was important … Continue reading

The Subjective Experience of Being a Father

What does it mean to be a father? How do I “be” a father? What does a father “do?” What does being a dad mean to you? Like my Scandinavian ancestors and relatives, I like to tease and joke with my children. I get the better part of the relationship, though. They have a funnier sense of humor than I do. But they know their father cares and interacts with them, and sometimes they even laugh at my jokes and teasing. Of course being a father is more than just horsing around. We go to work daily, if we can, … Continue reading

October 2011 General Conference- Elaine S. Dalton Address

“The most important thing a father can do for his daughter is love her mother.” -Elaine S. Dalton Sitting lazily in our backyard swing listening to conference on Sunday morning with our kids semi-listening, that quote above struck me, and I couldn’t help but poke my husband and say, “Are you listening?” I know we’ve all done it. We’ve all made sure that our husbands listen to what is important, but I couldn’t help but love this talk. We have one daughter, and she is our oldest. I know that she holds a special place in my husband’s heart. And, … Continue reading
