The Lemonade Stand

My daughter has a lemonade stand. This is no ordinary lemonade stand. In fact, it is becoming a fixture of the neighborhood, or it has in the last week. You see, early last week my daughter and I went to do some errands. We walked into a toy store and this was a mistake. We were both tired. There was much whining and complaining and wanting of Playmobil, especially a certain camper van. The van is $60 with taxes, and there is no way I’m going to spend that much on a toy that isn’t a Christmas or birthday gift. … Continue reading

Ask a Homeschooling Blogger: Why Are You So Against Government Intervention? Part 4

Note: As I have explained in the first blog in this series yesterday, I have received an e-mail that I think articulates the opinions of many who do not home school and don’t understand why those of us who do might see government intervention as a bad thing. I generally ignore these letters because they are often riddled with poor language and have clearly not been thought out. For the original question in part, please see the first blog. This is a continuation of my response. My Agenda Against Hilary and What I’m “Hiding” I have never sat to tea … Continue reading

Do you have some reading to catch up on? (I have some writing to catch up on!) The home schooling blog saw quite a few articles this week and we also welcomed a new home schooling blogger: Michele Thorne. When you get a chance, make sure you offer her a warm welcome over here in home schooling. September 10 What Is Your Teaching Style? In a previous blog, I talked about why I feel it’s important for home schooling moms to make a point to learn what their teaching style is. In this article I cover the four basic types … Continue reading

The Lemonade Stand

Yesterday, my children (along with a buddy) did their very first lemonade stand. I realize that lemonade is just about to go out of season but really, we had been meaning to do it all summer and just never got to it. Everyone over the age of four was involved in the lemonade stand and really, it was a pretty big hit. We sold out all of our ingredients and at the very end had to turn people away. . .and we were only out there for about an hour. The experience though, got me thinking about what a great … Continue reading

Sunkist “Take a Stand” Free Lemonade Stand

Do you remember running a lemonade stand when you were a kid? I do. Of course, any money that we made was less than my mom paid for the Kool-Aid and sugar that we used. Yep, lemonade without lemons. As a parent, it’s rare that I let my kids drink that stuff, but as a fundraiser it was a blast. Sunkist remembers. They’re offering free lemonade stands (you don’t even have to pay for shipping!) for children ages 7 and 12 who want to “Take a Stand” for charity. The stand includes: 56”x 27” cardboard Lemonade Stand with instructions Citrus … Continue reading

Making Snow Cones from a Blizzard

That’s a desperate mom’s twist on the proverbial phrase about lemons and lemonade. When you live in the frozen tundra that is northern Wisconsin you have to flex your creative muscle on a regular basis in order to keep from going stir crazy during the winter months.  This is especially true if your home is filled with antsy children.  Even a singleton can push you to the limits if the weather outside is so frightful that winter play is limited to the living room, kitchen or basement. If you are enjoying a reprieve from Mother Nature right now, remember that … Continue reading

The Difference Between Saving and Investing: An Important Distinction for Kids to Learn

You can save or you can invest. It is a distinction that many adults struggle with as a concept. How then can kids understand the difference, and why is it so important? Most kids who are introduced to the concepts of money tend to be conservative. They like to hoard as much of their money as they can and save up for things. That is a great phase that can be utilized by parents, caregivers and teachers to teach the value and the responsibility of money. Unfortunately, most kids do not get any instruction past those initial lessons. Many experts … Continue reading
