The Homeschooler's Advent Calendar: Crafty Activities at Families.com
by Valorie Delp | More from this Blogger
Do you tour this website? I have to admit that I check out a few blogs regularly, but if I'm searching for something I often go to the forums to get people's opinions. However, when I was thinking about today's Advent calendar topic, I thought I'd take a good look around at what Families.com has to offer. Obviously the blogger in fun or kid's crafts doesn't blog in homeschooling--but which of us homeschoolers doesn't like to get out the craft boxes every so often? In reality, I found many ideas that I can use for our Christmas celebrations during homeschool.
Crafts are a great activity to include in the course of your homeschooling week. They help develop artistic ability and motor skills. However, if you need a little extra something to convince you it really is worth digging out all the craft supplies, I've included a few suggestions.
Altered Christmas Paint Cans
A pretty decoration to give gifts in but how do you know how much wrapping paper to use? Enter the measuring tape and a mini-math lesson. If you're really ambitious bake some cookies for your paint cans too!
Matchbox Ornament Gifts
Working on a craft project together, especially one that is to be given away, is precious time with your child. Work on things like following directions, and fine motor skills.
Christmas Décor: Crafts for Kids
I especially love the marshmallow candy cane in this one. While you're waiting for the first side to dry, try looking up information on the history of a candy cane.
Make a Snowman--Without Snow
Use fellow blogger Sherry Holetsky's awesome idea and make this snowman. What's great about the idea is it leaves a lot of room for creativity. It can also be a quick lesson in building scultures. Encourage your kids to let loose their creative side on this one!
Let's Make Christmas Stockings
For a few years now, we have made something for residents in a nursing home and we take our goodies to visit. This year, I have a feeling our special project will be Christmas stockings. Community service is an important part of education and it's never too early to start.
