The Homeschoolers' Advent Calendar: Christmas Scienceby Valorie Delp | More from this Blogger 04 Dec 2006 08:58 PM Those who know my family well, know us as "the science people". When we worked at a private school, we ran the science fairs. In fact, it was a science fair for homeschoolers that got us started in running a home schooling support group. My husband especially, is known for his fine command of explaining physics to preschoolers. So if you knew us well, you would not be shocked that we actually have Christmas themed science. I hope you enjoy these links, tidbits, questions and ideas about science and Christmas. You undoubtedly have heard that Norad has been tracking Santa Clause for over fifty years now. But did you know that it all started when a Sears store advertised for kids to call Santa and accidentally published the wrong number. Kids ended up dialing the folks at CONAD (NORAD'S predecessor) and it has been tradition ever since. The website explains how they use satellite and military surveillance to track Santa's movements. It also includes coloring pages for your little ones and a whole host of activities. Don't know what a Koch snowflake is? Check out this website to see how you can make one. Admittedly, this is more of a math activity than a science activity, but the math is advanced so I've included it here anyways! This article explains how scientists discovered that Christmas should actually be celebrated in September. While they may have discovered some 'good science', I still prefer white Christmases. While chromatography isn't exclusively related to Christmas, the clever author of these lesson plans has creatively intertwined a mystery and chemistry creating one fun to do science puzzler! Here is a pretty creative look at what the reindeer might have seen on their transatlantic voyages delivering presents to all the girls and boys. Of course, that was for my little brother, not my kids. Next up, some Santa physics worksheets! LOL. My high school physics teacher was always good at coming up with creative demonstrations. "If the reindeer accelerate at x m/s..." Valorie Delp (49340) 04 Dec 2006 08:08 PMLOL. We've thought about doing that for our homeschool co-op. But if we start doing it now, we have 18 more years to have to be creative. If we wait until our kids are older, it considerably shortens the amount and number of problems we have to come up with! ;-) Community Tags advent, homeschooling, science Discuss this article
