Teaching Math with Crayons

If you look through educational catalogs or websites you will see plenty of options for math manipulatives. I have purchased more than one set of counting bears over my years of homeschooling. In fact, counting bears are one of my favorite math manipulative simply because I find them adorable. If you look closely you will see that most or all math manipulatives have two common features. Those two features are: easily held by mini hands and colorful. That is all it takes to begin the learning process of basic math. The simple counting bears will allow a child to learn … Continue reading

The Factor Tree

Kids love to do work on the computer. Somehow even the hardest subject digests easier if a keyboard and a mouse are involved. Parents also seem to love the convenience of having their student work online. No paper work, progress reports are automatic and normally there are no tears involved. One such online program is The Factor Tree. The Factor Tree is an online math supplemental program for children in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade. This online program is not intended to replace a math curriculum but enhance your current curriculum. Let’s be honest, if we need to supplement the … Continue reading

What is the Right Way …

I’ve homeschooled my children from the beginning, and have given advice to countless moms who want to begin teaching their children at home. Among the questions I hear are these: “What is the right way to encourage my children?” “How do I help them feel motivated?” “What can I do to keep their interest?” When I am asked these questions, I always turn to them and say, “You’re the only one who has the answer to that.” As parents, we know our children inside and out. We know them in ways that no teacher, professor, principal, or friend ever could. … Continue reading

Rewards Points

I was just thinking about all the things I accumulate reward points for. I get points for buying Pampers products and points for buying Huggies products. I often look at the catalog of products I’m earning points to buy, for lack of a better word. I rarely see anything I want to pay shipping on to have. Although, I do think there’s a Pampers item I want. I guess I’ll just keep collecting points until I have enough for the vacation. I like Pampers diapers, although not the new Dry Max, and Huggies wipes, but don’t go out of my … Continue reading

Home Schooling with a Toddler in Tow

Have you ever been teaching algebra and been interrupted by the sound of your toddler riffling through your bookcase? Or teaching biology and look up to see your walls decorated with Crayola markers, complements of your toddler? Or worse yet, realize you have not taught a decent day of school since your baby turned into a toddler? Home schooling is not for the faint of heart. Our families are constantly changing, growing, and living life in between fractions and Moby Dick. One of the biggest changes a home schooling family can go through is the addition of a new baby. … Continue reading

Summer Activity Bags

Summer is coming up and most students are ready to sleep late and watch television. However, learning does not have to stop just because schools are closed. Each year I look for summer ideas and activities to share with my parents. It is important to supply children with fun educational learning over the two months of summer vacation. While carrying out my search this year, I found a wonderful idea for a summer backpack. Like most discoveries, I took the idea and adapted it to fit my liking. The core of this project came from the May issue of Teaching … Continue reading

Now That’s a Lot of Money! Teachers and Non-Reimbursed Spending

Teaching isn’t a profession that you can just walk into and expect to make the big bucks, and most teachers know this. A lot of new teachers most likely won’t find out until they step into their classroom for the first time that besides making pretty low amounts of dough, they will also be using cash out of their own pockets for school supplies throughout the year. I don’t know a lot of other professions that spend the amount that teachers do on supplies. I think you may be amazed at just how much a teacher spends per year for … Continue reading
