Teaching Toddlers Empathy

One important skill that we as parents can help our children to learn is empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand and experience the feelings of others, and to respond in helpful ways. No child is too young to begin learning about empathy. In fact, you have probably been modeling empathy for your child since the moment that she was born by being sensitive to her feelings and responding to her needs. As your toddler grows, she can begin to build on the empathy that you have shown her by reaching out to others in a caring way. Of course, … Continue reading

Teaching Handwriting without a Curriculum

On my blog’s Facebook page, I was asked to recommend a handwriting curriculum. I have received this question many times before and always cringe when asked. I cringe because I have nothing to recommend. Years of homeschool reviews and homeschooling under my belt and I still have not used a formal handwriting curriculum. Frankly, I never understood why one would use a curriculum based on handwriting. I teach handwriting the old fashioned way by sitting at a whiteboard and showing each stroke of each letter. My children would sit with lined paper and mimic my movements. I will not claim … Continue reading

Teaching Color Words

My daughter is in the process of learning sight words. Our first introduction into site words was color words. Obviously sight words are learned by memorization. So the trick was to teach her to memorize the color words without a lot of stress and headache. Education should never be about stress yet there are times it is a byproduct. With my reluctant reader I wanted to make things as fun as possible to open up the world of reading in a positive way. I came up with a few ideas to teach her color words in an effective way that … Continue reading

But, I Can’t Teach Music

I Can’t Teach Music Experience tells me I am not the only one who has uttered these words.  When I embarked on homeschooling I considered many things.  I considered phonics, math, literature, history, and methodology.  I lived in the bright light of hope for my ability to homeschool joyfully and effectively.  My glasses were always rosy colored.  It’s easy to color your view rosy when you simply do not consider the road blocks.  I assumed I would figure it all out on the job.  Then one day, it happened.  My child developed a love for music and desired to sing … Continue reading

More Favorite Preschool Curriculum

Yesterday I shared some of my favorite preschool educational materials. Here are a few more I have seen success with while homeschooling preschool. Kumon Workbooks: Kumon workbooks are based on a method created by, Toru Kumon, who originally developed these books to help his own son. The Kumon method promises success by allowing children to master skills in small bites. The workbooks are designed as a supplement to a child’s regular curriculum. The workbooks, My First Book of Cutting and My First Book of Pasting, were a huge hit with my preschoolers. The books are filled with colorful illustrations that … Continue reading

Favorite Preschool Curriculum

Preschool is a delightful time in a child’s life. Little hands writing their name for the first time or creating a unique art project. Preschoolers are very curious and want to learn about everything around them. Their excitement is contagious and as moms or homeschoolers we want to be sure we are giving them the best educational start possible. I try to tell moms homeschooling preschool for the first time to let the child lead. Allow for fun, creativity, nature walks, painting, exploring and making big messes. Lessons are best learned messy and hands on. However many have expressed they … Continue reading

Apple Season Activites

It’s apple season! September is a wonderful month filled with images of cool days, apple cider and playing in the leaves. For my family it is apple picking season. We normally go at least once a season but this season we lucked out! My daughter has volleyball practice near an apple orchard so my other children and I will be visiting the orchard a few more times this year. I think the donuts and cider are my son’s favorite part. My daughter’s love to munch on the apples and go home to make apple pie. Apple orchards make lovely teaching … Continue reading

Fun Ways to Teach ABC’s

Teaching the alphabet is magical. A child gets to see how those letters she never recognized come together to form words she does recognize. Once she learns the sounds and begins to form words she realized the magic in books. Soon you will have an avid reader on your hands. Before you check out all the books in the juvenile section of your local library you need to start off with the basics. The basics begin with letter recognition and simple phonics. There are fun ways to teach ABCs and here are a few. Paint Strip Letters: Go to your … Continue reading

The Curse of Swearing

“Stop f-ing around you dumb***!” “F-you, jerk!” “You’re the jerk, *$*#!” That’s just a tiny excerpt of the filth my 6-year-old was exposed to while standing in line for a water ride at Six Flags Great America earlier this summer. Fortunately, my little angel had no clue that the colorful language spewing from the mouths of the random teens messing around in front of us at the “family-friendly” amusement park is grounds for a severe butt whooping in some clans. Namely mine. As much as I would love for my daughter to reside in a hermetically-sealed bubble, I know the … Continue reading
