For the Beauty of the Earth

I love the hymn, “For The Beauty of the Earth“. It has been one of my favorites for a long time. Last night, my little family took a drive up one of the canyons close to our house to look at the fall colors. I am constantly awe struck by the beauty of the mountains where I live. Growing up in TX, we don’t have mountains, and it seems like the fall colors are not as vibrant as the aspen trees against the evergreens in the mountains. They amaze me, and I feel like it takes my breath away. As … Continue reading

Teaching Beauty

What do you think about when you teach science? Do you think that you’re helping children understand the world, methodically and in a practical fashion, going through the families of plants and the different groups of animals? Is science a way of categorizing the world and helping it make sense? Do you think that you’re helping children change the world, creating science experiments that may lead to solutions to global problems? Are your children going to create cures for diseases and reduce the pollution from vehicles? Is science a way into the minds of the past and the great minds … Continue reading

Teaching with Simplicity

This past Sunday was my turn to do sharing time. It had been 2 weeks since I had been to church, and I was looking forward to it. I had a cool game planned, and knew the kids would have so much fun. However, the subject was the word of wisdom, and I felt strongly that they needed to hear the doctrine of the word of wisdom before playing the game so that they understood. We had older kids pair up with younger ones and did the simplest lesson. We pulled out our scriptures and read and talked together from … Continue reading

General Relief Society Broadcast

Last night was the General Relief Society broadcast. I was lucky enough to get to attend the broadcast downtown in the conference center. It has been a long time since I had attended in person, and I had forgotten the enormity of the building, and how vast the number of members that can fit into it. I was immediately struck by singing the beautiful music with thousands of sisters singing with me. It is definitely a spiritual experience to get to go and listen to the leaders first-hand give us counsel from the Lord. A new general relief society presidency … Continue reading

Rick Santorum’s Comments on Health Insurance

The Republican candidate’s campaigns continue. Rick Santorum has been declared the winner of the Minnesota primary, the Colorado non-binding caucus, and the Missouri “beauty contest”. Santorum spoke a lot about health insurance in his victory speech. One of the reasons why it is important for a candidate to win a primary is because of the delegates. The candidate who wins a state primary will get the votes of the delegates of that state. This is important because eventually, the Republican party will have to select one of the many candidates who are running. It is the delegates who vote. The … Continue reading

Winter Woolens: Making Wool Crafts With Kids

I love wool. I love it in the morning and the afternoon, and I love to get it for Christmas and for my birthday. This Christmas, I got a bag of wool from my sister in law. I have a bag of unwashed wool in my workshop from the sheep at the local petting zoo. I just really, really like wool. Oddly enough, I also dislike knitting. I’m very left-handed, so doing anything with my right hand is a bit of a challenge. I much prefer crochet, since it only involves one hand. So what do I do with wool, … Continue reading

Cool Find: A Kid’s Guide to Drawing America

State history is required in most states. I must admit I am not always up on teaching state history while in the middle of teaching algebra, biology, preschool, American History, Ancient History, Latin, and all other subjects to my children. I teach history chronologically and so far we have not hit the history of my state. After giving this great thought, I realized it is important to take out time to briefly teach the history of my state. After all, it is where we live and one should know about the place they dwell. It is only logical. To help … Continue reading

A Study in Princesses: Careers Coda

You need more than just him in your life, Ariel Today I’m going to add a tongue-in-cheek coda to my otherwise serious series on the Disney Princesses. If most of these princesses should have had something other in their lives than their men, what should those things be? I’m going to posit alternate endings to most of the films; mainly, recommendations for the careers into which the Disney Princesses ought to have embarked instead. Some suggestions might be a bit sillier than others. “Snow White” – One thing Snow White did excellently was to get those dwarves to come out … Continue reading
