Still homeschooling?by Andrea Hermitt | More from this Blogger 02 May 2009 03:00 PM As we finish our 6th year of homeschooling and start planning our 7th, we are content to continue homeschooling through high school. People around us however are not quite as content. I have lost count of how many people have asked if we were "still homeschooling" and if we really plan to continue next year. My favorite grocery store cashier, has actually been asking on a weekly basis. I let it go because I am beginning to wonder if her repeated question isn't a symptom of senility instead of stubborn harassment. I choose to believe the former. As I have mentioned before, most of my kids' homeschooling crowd will be going to public school next year. For some it is a financial decision. For others, it was the plan all along to homeschool through middle school then send the kids to public high school. For my family, we are content with the kids academic progress, and don't feel that public high school would be an improvement on what we are currently doing. In the beginning, I thought homeschooling was a difficult thing to defend as so many people question you and try to understand your (obviously warped) logic. Justifying homeschooling through high school is a different thing altogether. "You've done your part" they say. "It's time to send them out into the world" they insist. Even when I retort that they are not interested in public school, I am told that maybe I need to "force them" so that they can be more social. I am sure we will get used to the arguments, especially since most people are being at least polite when they ask the questions. Still, sometimes I don't feel inclined to answer. *Have a question about homeschooling? Just ask. * Have you seen the homeschooling curriculum glossary?
