Teaching Social Skills

If I had it to do all over again, I would make sure Hailey spent more time with other people. After a divorce your social life seems to diminish. Things that you would have been invited to as part of a couple you are no longer invited to. It’s uncomfortable sometimes for friends that the two of you shared during your marriage. They don’t feel like they can invite you both but inviting one of you feels like choosing sides so the invitations just stop coming. This makes it lonelier as a single mother but it also limits your child’s … Continue reading

So, Where Will They Socialize?

One of the biggest concerns people have about homeschooling is the lack of social life the child will have as a result of being taught at home. Studies have debunked the myth that homeschooled children are not socially adapted … and other studies show these children to be behind their peers in social skills. It all depends on who runs the study. But that’s a topic for another day. The point is, human beings do need a certain amount of interaction with other human beings. I mean, look at Tarzan. He wasn’t the most civilized individual, having been raised with … Continue reading

The Social Outcast

It’s the first day back at school in these parts, and so my daughter is about to become a social outcast. So say a few people I know. Of course, all homeschoolers are social outcasts, right? Isn’t that why we homeschool – to ensure that our children get no social time with others? Well, of course not. You might not choose to enroll your child in classes that you feel might be inappropriate for their social development, and some of those classes may be school-based. Perhaps you are concerned about bullying or about peer pressure. Those concerns are valid. No … Continue reading

Worried About Socialization?

The question of socialization as it relates to homeschoolers never seems to die down. I believe this question has been asked and answered to the naysayers multiple times. However, well intentioned parents are concerned with this aspect when making the decision to homeschool. We live in a society where homeschooling is the exception and not the rule. Parents considering homeschooling have questions about all areas of homeschooling which include socialization. Public and private schools have after school programs, clubs, sports and outlets for the children to mingle and interface with other students and teachers. It only stands to reason that … Continue reading

Reasons to Love Having an Only Child: The Preschool Years

When I was growing up, only children were perceived as very negative little human beings. My mother told me that only children were spoiled and lonely. They didn’t know how to socialize. I grew up pitying only children and vowed to have at least four children of my own. I had two siblings and loved being the big sister. Then came my daughter, and then came a host of medical challenges that made it difficult for me to have more children. I found myself in an interesting position: I needed to confront my stereotypes about only children, because I was … Continue reading

I Think We Can Lay the Socialization Myth to Rest

According to a study of Canadian Home-Educated Adults, socialization of homeschoolers is a non-issue. This is a follow-up of a study done in 1994 that only had positive things to say about homeschooling. 15 years later they re-surveyed as many of these same people as possible and it showed that adult homeschoolers were pretty content with their lives. In short, the study revealed the following: *Out of 226 the respondents to the second survey, only three people had not completed nor were working on their eduction. These three people were gainfully employed. *Homeschooled adults were more likely than the general … Continue reading

Where are these unsocialized homeschoolers?

I observed the following twitter conversation today (I am paraphrasing as I remember it): Comment 1: (From adult male) I coach a bunch of homeschooled students. They are a very distinctive bunch. Comment 2: (same person) It’s interesting that the girls have the same distinctive speech pattern as the boys. Comment 3: (From teenage girl) I’ve only met one homeschooled person whose personality did not scream HOMESCHOOL but his parents ran a COOP so it was like a school. Needless to say, I was perturbed. To the first person, I wanted to scream “What? Do you mean proper English?!!!” That … Continue reading

Defining Your Exercise Personality

Do you gravitate towards certain types of gym equipment more than others? Do you struggle to stick with your exercise routine?
