Texting Your Child While in School

During a particularly difficult time for my daughter, she sent me a text one day from school. She needed to tell me something. I responded, she responded, I responded…it turned into a 20 minute “texting” conversation. All of this was while she was in a class. I felt a twinge of guilt. Should I really be texting my daughter while she is in school? I’m sure most parents would say no. But the circumstances wouldn’t allow me to say, “We’ll talk about it later.” The reality is that she may not have been ready to discuss what she was. Now … Continue reading

PreSchool Safety

This week in Preschool, my daughter learned all about safety. I’ve always wondered when is too young to start talking about strangers, without worrying your child about things that they should not worry about. But, by the time they enter preschool, I think they should definitely know about strangers, and other things to be safe about. Her teacher asked all the parents to help their child memorize their address and phone number. I thought this was a great idea! Mainly because I have been trying to teach her for a few months now, but we were kind of lazy about … Continue reading

Pre-Halloween Safety Reminders

Can your child see clearly through his ninja mask? Is the hem on your daughter’s princess costume short enough for her to run from house to house without tripping? These are just some of the questions parents should be asking themselves in the days before Halloween. After all, the last place you want to go trick-or-treating on October 31st is the hospital emergency room. Safety should be the number one priority for parents as their kids make a mad dash for free chocolate and other sugary treats. If you are looking to protect your little ghosts and goblins from potential … Continue reading

Do You Feed Your Dog People Food?

Not as innocent as she looks I’ve always fallen somewhere in the middle ground of the should dogs have people food debate, between those I know who never let their dogs have the smallest morsel of human food, and those who (and I’ve actually seen this) will feed their pets several hot dogs at a cookout. I think my stance on the issue was born in part out of laziness. Having a dog has certainly ruined me when it comes to cleaning up after myself in the kitchen. Whenever food falls to the floor during meal preparation, my first instinct … Continue reading

Do Your Kids Help in the Kitchen?

My 6-year-old loves to lend a hand (and a mouth) in the kitchen. The cooking classes I enrolled her in paid off in a big way, as her culinary skills are quite advanced for someone her age. Still, she has a way to go before she can whip up a five-course meal for the entire family unassisted. What’s more, she is still learning the finer points of food safety. If your kids like to assist with meal preparation, don’t let the opportunity to teach them basic health and safety tips pass you by. For example, my first grader already knows … Continue reading

Is Your Toyota Prius Safe?

As you probably know, Toyota has issued several major recalls recently. So far, one of the greenies favorite cars, the Prius, has not been involved in any of the major recalls, but owners of earlier models were advised to take out their floor mats to keep them from blocking the accelerator pedals. Should Prius owners be concerned for their safety? The Toyota Prius was first introduced to the U.S. consumers in 2001 after being released in Japan in 1997. There was much anticipation of this vehicle as it is a full hybrid electric car. So far, there have been over … Continue reading

Has Your Child Ever Been Injured in Gym Class?

I slammed my head and cut my lip during a high school gym class volleyball match… and I didn’t cry. In fact, I was elated by my fate because it meant that I would be afforded a week’s worth of excused absences and didn’t have to attend a class I despised. Unfortunately, injuries like my split lip are increasing at an alarming rate during physical education classes in the United States. According to a new report, injuries to American children during school gym classes increased by 150 percent from 1997 to 2007. The numbers come from 100 representative U.S. hospitals … Continue reading

State-By-State Insurance Help for Your Kids

Do your children have health insurance? They need to if they do not. A single parent is working so hard to make ends meet on one income, but going without health insurance for yourself or kids is not a choice. One devastating illness can set you back financially for many years down the road. One family that I know of did not have health insurance when their first child was born and they were still paying this off when the child was 9 years old. You do not want to fall victim to financial ruin because you did not part … Continue reading

So Your Child Wants to Stay Home Alone

If you have tweens in your family the topic of staying home without adult supervision may be one you discuss frequently. This isn’t the case in my home (yet), but deciding whether or not to allow her 10-year-old daughter to fend for herself is a hot topic at my best friend’s house. My two cents worth was a firm “no,” and my BFF agreed, but her number one child won’t let the issue go. In their case, the 10-year-old wants to be unsupervised in the afternoons during a 2-hour period between the time she gets dropped off by the school … Continue reading
