Resources for the Unschoolerby Valorie Delp | More from this Blogger 12 Oct 2006 05:44 AM Unschooling, also known as natural learning, or child-led learning, is a means to educate children that allows them to investigate what they're interested in. While opponents say that it could produce children who don't understand how the real world works--research shows the opposite is true. Some of you have asked me to put together a list of resources for unschooling. Even if you are not an unschooled, I guarantee you that you will find something on this list that you'll be able to use. This is a comprehensive resource containing everything. This is a great place to visit for getting started. The Alternative Education Resource Organization While this website also includes information for other types of alternative education besides home schooling, it is comprehensive and is another great arsenal of resources for those who are just getting started. An ezine of unchooling and 'mindful parenting' Another newsletter chalk full of helpful articles I have to admit that one reason this site is on this list is because I love the name. What a great way to describe unschooling: "Delight Driven" Has lots of personal articles, blogs, etc. but is very well thought out and has good information especially in how to deal with others criticisms. Lifelearning.org This site has links to free lesson plans, books stores, articles and more. Live Free Learn Free This site boasts, "The largest collection of resources on the web." This is a magazine to which you can subscribe. Are you looking for a book about unschooling? Look at Amazon.com's list mania which of course, lists books about unschooling. (I personally would take the list and then go the library but there are definitely some good reads in this list.) John Holt is the father of unschooling so it makes sense that you might want to check out his book store for more information and resources. I hope for all of you who are looking for unschooling, natural learning, or as I like the term "delight driven" learning, resources this list has been helpful. I would love to hear from you if you find another resource that others would benefit from. Learn more about Valorie Delp ![]() Hello everybody! My name is Valorie and I am one busy lady! My son starts his "delight driven" two days per week as of tomorrow. After school this afternoon he attended a conference where I was presenting a workshop at, BUT, because he's being unschooled tomorrow he has to also attend another workshop presentation with me and report back to his class on it next week. Tonght he's helped me make up conference workshop packages and we have worked out what role he will play in my BITSS of Protective Play presentation. What delightful, and hands-on, learrning for him. My husband comes home tomorrow night. THANK GOODNESS - I am exhausted. Valorie Delp (49340) 12 Oct 2006 06:22 AMYou will be absolutely amazed at what they will learn. We use the mall, grocery shopping, walking down the block, the train. . .you get the idea for abosolutely any type of learning activity. And they retain it. I do use curriculum, which the kids love, but I don't bat an eyelash to ditch it in favor of something else either! That sounds great! carol pitts (168) 06 Aug 2007 11:29 AMThank you so much, this little to no money unscooling is just what I was praying for. my children are going to grow up just fine without a time line teacher telling them what to learn and how to learn it.THANK YOU! Valorie Delp (49340) 06 Aug 2007 01:00 PMYou're so welcome. Andrea, who was doing our homeschool blogs has left, but if you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer!
