Reasons I am glad we homeschool: School Violence

It has been 10 long years since the Columbine tragedy, but that horrible day when two students murdered 12 others and one teacher is etched deep in the hearts of our country. That day proved that those we trust to protect and teach our children really have limited power to do anything. Faced with guns and a detailed plan, almost anyone can wreak havoc on our schools and endanger our children.

While many homeschoolers do so in an effort to protect their kids from the danger of schools, my reason was more academic and emotional. Still the side effect not being in a large school where protection is attempted, but not promised, I am glad that homeschooling affords a bit of added protection from the dangers of this world.

Now I am not deluded into thinking that my kids will never be subject to unknown dangers. We all know there are neighborhood dangers, there are dangers at the houses of friends, there are dangers in crossing streets, there are dangers in church, and there are dangers where they take classes twice a week. Worst of all are the inevitable dangers in college, where my children will eventually land.

Still as our country commemorates that horrific day from 10 years ago, I can't help but breathe a sigh of relief that my kids environment is a bit more controlled and the chance of them being caught up in a Columbine type event is greatly lessened.
