The Sometimes Schoolers

There is unschooling. There is e-learning. There are formal homeschooling methods that are based on other curricula or ideologies, such as classical homeschooling, Waldorf, and Montessori. In our city, there seems to be a new breed of homeschooler emerging, one that may transform the worlds of school-based education and home-based education. Delaying Pre-School

When I was in second and third grades I was in a program called Mentally Gifted Minors or MGM. It was a great program. The program met on a different campus on certain days. Those students in the program rode the bus to the other school on those days. MGM was self-led study. It was very enjoyable and I learned a lot. My sister’s children all went to a Montessori school for pre-school and some for kindergarten as well. They all had very good experiences and did well in school. The first article outlining the growth of education discussed some early ideas and influences on teaching. The second article discussed the beginning of college and formal education. Homeschool Curriculum Glossary (Shiller – Smith hand)

Shiller Math is a curriculum for ages 4 – 8 that relies heavily on manipulatives. Shiller Math was written by Larry Shiller, an MIT math major who wanted to “impart his zeal for math to American children of today as an after-school supplement or homeschooling course.” This program is based on the Montessori Method of learning.
