The Song Book

Books are important for children. I can’t even describe or recall all of the wonderful things our son has learned about the world he inhabits through books. Even the most simple things like the names of animals or that a tree is different from a dog. He’s even figured out how to identify guitars (and, in fact, calls the harps that animated angels tend to hold “guitars” as well). These children’s books are clearly important to his development as a person. His recognition of the ideas and items in books has expanded vastly upon multiple readings. He’s especially learned a … Continue reading

Learning Through Song

Some one recently explained to me that her 4-year-old child who she is homeschooling learns best through song. This method of learning is so effective for him that he has learned his times tables. (I know for a fact that his method is very effective as my Jamaican husband and siblings learned to memorize multiplication facts in the same way at a very early age.) She asked for more ideas for educational music. Here are my recommendations. My favorite education music/cd’s is School House Rock. I purchased the 30th Anniversary issue that includes every School House Rock song ever created. … Continue reading

Fulfilling Homeschool Requirements through Hobbies

Today, guest homeschool blogger Julie Gentry wrote about homeschooling and scouting. She described how scouting fulfills many academic requirements. Not only can your child fulfill homeschool requirements through scouting, but also through just about any hobby. My daughter, for instance, competes in pageants and is on a step team. (Step is the dance competitions in which African American fraternities and sororities participate.) Pageant activities eliminate any question of socialization. It also forces her to develop her musical talents. She is learning how to write and recite speeches as well. (Language Arts). While all of these are not standard core curriculum, … Continue reading

The Song of the Lark – Willa Cather

“The Song of the Lark” by Willa Cather is similar in a lot of ways to “A White Bird Flying” by Bess Streeter Aldrich. “Lark,” too, is about a young girl who grows up knowing that she has a gift and wants to develop it into everything it can and should be, in this case the talent of singing, whereas in “Bird,” the talent is writing. Thea Kronberg is our heroine in “Lark.” The daughter of a preacher with seven children, she understands that her place is to help with the children, do her chores, and be obedient. Beyond that, … Continue reading

Learning from Bobby Powell

A little boy usually doesn’t care about reading music or singing a song from a Broadway musical, unless that little boy is Bobby Powell. He was the kid that never played on a little league team, ran with a football, or played tag during recess. Bobby contracted polio at an early age; he was left with a ravaged body and a set of heavy braces encompassing his withered legs. He and I attended the same elementary school back in the 1950’s. We developed a friendship in the third grade. Bobby and I were both trying out for the talent show … Continue reading

Help Your Learning Disabled Child With Letters and Words

When most children are initially introduced to the alphabet, they see each letter as a picture. The letter “T” might look like one stick balancing on top of the other. An “O” might look like a ring. Yet soon a child’s perception begins to change, and the concept of letters transfers from the right hemisphere of the brain to the left–the auditory-linguistic hemisphere. That’s when a “T” becomes an actual symbol that can be associated with a sound. Children with learning disabilities often have great difficulty with this transition in thinking. They are simply “stuck” in the spatial intelligence frame … Continue reading
