The Natural Transitions In My Work Day

I just read a thought provoking post by Stephanie Romero about transitioning between work and home. It made me think about my experience as a home – based professional parent. There are some transitions between work and home that do happen in my life. However, I had not given them much thought until reading Stephanie’s post. Now that I think about it, the transitions that are an automatic part of what I do are rather important. One of my home – based businesses is my very small law practice. As part of the work that I do for my clients, … Continue reading

Natural Ways to Boost Your Energy

Energy drinks, such as 5-Hour Energy and others are a booming industry. Many people rely on these energy drinks to get through the day. I’ve seen them being pulled out of purses, laid on people’s desks, and sold out at the convenience stores. I’ve never tried these drinks myself, so I can’t speak for them, but wouldn’t it be better to try something natural first? There are several ways to naturally boost your energy levels throughout the day. Many of them are just common sense, but there are a few tricks in there, too. First of all, getting enough sleep … Continue reading

Tips for Affiliate Marketing on Your Blog

Affiliate marketing can be a roaring success, a moderate success or it can fall flat. Often falling flat or moderate success can occur despite our best efforts. If that is happening to you then switch to another affiliate. It is perhaps an affiliate that does not resonate with your readers. However, more times than now the reason affiliate marketing fails is due to a lack of work. Affiliate marking does not succeed by placing an ad on a sidebar and forgetting about it. In fact, placing an ad on your sidebar is one of the least successful ways to spreading … Continue reading

Spreading Smucker’s Traditions Recipe and Essay Contest,

The J.M. Smucker company which has been operating for 110 years never fails to offer fine tasting jams and jellies which make the family breakfast table a bit cozier. Smucker’s jams and jellies are also a healthier alternative to cream cheese or butter. Try some of your favorite fruit spread on an English muffin and you will gladly say goodbye to the high fat bagel and cream cheese habit. Unless, of course, you use fat free cream cheese and decide to add a dollop of Smucker’s fruit spread for a deluxe breakfast treat. Adding jams and jellies for sweetness instead … Continue reading

Learning Unit – Japan and Natural Disasters

We have all watched the news reports from Japan with horror and sadness. Some of us have children old enough to understand the ramifications, and some of us have children too young to comprehend. I suggest using this monumental event in our world’s history as a study unit in our homeschools. Geography –pull out maps or our globe and discuss where Japan is, what its major cities are, and learn what other countries surround it. Social Studies – learn about the culture of Japan and what makes it such a strong, proud country. Learn to make some traditional Japanese dishes … Continue reading

Reading Makes for Great Vocabularies!

“You know what I realized,” my six-year-old said to me the other day. I didn’t catch just what it was that he realized—I was silently chuckling over his choice of words. He listens to his older brothers and sister talk, and to his parents talk, and he picks up on our phrases and the words we use. As I listen to all my children as they converse, I just have to give myself a pat on the back—we’re a family of readers, and it shows. The English language is amazing. We have words to indicate every nuance of what we’re … Continue reading

Is Reading Natural?

I know people who read before age five, with very little education on how to read. My husband is one of them. Several children of friends also learned how to read at age three. These people were fluent readers before kindergarten. I also know people who read at ages far beyond five. My father is one of them. He didn’t read until age eight or older, and today he is a fluent reader. It is popular in unschooling circles to think about reading as something that will come to all children naturally. I see the validity in the argument, but … Continue reading

Back-to-School Reading

Hallmark has been selling Halloween cards and decorations since July (they’re hawking Christmas tree ornaments too), so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that Barnes and Noble has an entire display of back-to-school themed books set up in the middle of their kids’ section. Fortunately, my 6-year-old loves school, so she didn’t hightail it out of the store screaming like a banchee upon seeing the sky-high display heralding the end of summer vacation. Instead, my little bookworm made a beeline for her favorite book series, many of which feature back-to-school editions, including: Pinkalicious: School Rules by Victoria Kann Victoria Kann’s … Continue reading

Reading Beauty Labels: Citric Acid

We can figure this one out from the name, right? Citric, as in “comes from citrus fruit”? Acid, as in “has a pH level less than 7.0“? Citric acid is naturally found in citrus fruits. Lemons and limes are among the fruits with the highest concentrations of citric acid — and this is what gives lemons and limes their sour taste. Oranges and tangerines are sweeter, and have less citric acid than their sour cousins. Citric acid is also found in some berries, like raspberries and blackberries. If you’re a label reader like I am, you’ve probably seen citric acid … Continue reading
