Be Careful What You Wish For

Has anyone ever told you to be careful what you wished for? I was reminded of that when I was first divorced and Hailey would go to her father’s for the weekend. I remember so many times thinking, I wish she would be quiet for just a minute, it’s so noisy in here I can’t even hear myself think! Then her father picked her up for that first weekend visit. Suddenly the house was too quiet, and I was at an absolute loss as to what to do with myself while she was gone. It got easier as time went … Continue reading

On This Day in History: December 13 – 17th

What fun things happened in history this week? Let’s take a look and get some ideas for how to incorporate these facts into your homeschool routine. December 13th – Today is St. Lucia’s Day. She was an Italian girl who lived in the 4th century and was persecuted and killed for her Christian beliefs. Today, she is celebrated by European families as they crown one of their daughters with a wreath of twisted leaves and she serves them a special breakfast. You can celebrate today by honoring each one of your children with a paper crown and talking about the … Continue reading

The Piano Player

Ever since we moved away from family we missed one thing (other than family) more than any other: music. Not recorded music, which is in abundance, but live music. And not so much the ability to go out and here some live music (as we can from time to time) but the ability to produce it ourselves. One of our specific goals as parents is to have an environment of art surround our children. Our son is reaping those benefits as much as possible at the moment. A couple of years ago we purchased a relatively nice keyboard. It isn’t … Continue reading

Borders Books Bankruptcy

It’s been big news here in the Dallas Metroplex that Borders Books is closing 19 area stores. Borders is going through bankruptcy. I hate when I hear that stores I enjoy are in trouble. I’ve shopped at one of the stores that’s closing. What’s funny is when Starbucks announced that it was closing a large number of stores, more of them kept being built in our area. I am so happy that those stores opened. I’m a reader. I grew up in a family of readers. Bookstores have always been a part of the places where I like to shop. … Continue reading

Service Projects for Kids Who Love Animals

If your child loves animals and would like a volunteer project, where do you start? Of course, there is fundraising. Animal shelters and conservation organizations are always in need of money. Instead of simply collecting or donating money for the organization, your child could make something that is connected. Perhaps he can paint beautifully and could sell hand-painted dog bowls. Perhaps she loves to bead and would like to create beaded leashes or hand-beaded turtles for backpacks. This is an opportunity to create a small business and to raise money for a worth-while organization. Another way to fundraise is to … Continue reading

Dressing Up

Our second placement loved to play dress-up. We bought a case of dress-up clothes so she could do just that. The case holds skirts, shoes, sleeves, and a veil. The case is a pretty pink with a carry handle. She was interested in dressing up much younger than Jessie. Dressing oneself is one of the markers that ECI in our area uses to assess a child’s development. Jessie does not put on her own clothes. She has, however, been taking them off for months. We never know what part of each day will have her running out to us without … Continue reading

Gardening As A Whole Curriculum

Now that spring is here, most states are starting to thaw out and warm up. This an excellent time to begin a garden, no matter how small, and teach the kids about botany, art, vocabulary, water conservation, nutrition, and so much more. I’m a firm believer in getting the most bang for my buck and most use out of every moment. Each lesson you teach your kids can incorporate many subjects, not just the most obvious one at hand. Gardening is no different. The house we live in now has a nice back and front yard, but even when we … Continue reading

Do Our Teens Have it Too Easy?

We had to wash dishes by hand. They have dishwashers that they won’t even load without a fight. We typed our term papers by hand and used white out. They use laptops and can create flawless papers with a little effort. We had to work with teachers after school if we didn’t understand a concept. They can use Google and Wikipedia as their tutors. We carried nickels and dimes so we could call home in case of an emergency, if we could find a payphone. They can connect to us and their friends instantly with their cell phones. We had … Continue reading
