Homeschooling on Saturday?

It is Saturday, and I just finished a homeschooling session with my daughter. I am not talking about teachable moments either. While teachable moments are incredibly valuable to a homeschooler, this morning we did math. After looking over the weeks work, I realized my daughter did not do as much math as I would have liked her to complete this week. If she wants a summer vacation, and to be ready for the placement test she will have to take (for next years program) in a few months, she needs to stay on a schedule. Since we homeschool, adding an … Continue reading

Homeschooling Laws in Georgia

This is not legal advice. As someone who lives in a state that is highly regulated, I cannot emphasize enough the need for you to advocate for yourself and make a point to know your state laws. While the school district will most likely provide you with a printed copy of the laws and regulations for home schooling, a local home schooling group can be a valuable asset when it comes to navigating your way through the system. In Georgia you have one option to home school your child. This is to establish and conduct a home study program. Compulsory … Continue reading

Bad Parenting: Parents Give At Home Tatoos

In case you don’t know, tattooing a minor is illegal in the State of Georgia. It is illegal in most other states too. In addition, most states also mandate that tattoos be done by a certified professional. Jacob Bartels and Patty Marsh were unaware of these laws. Imagine their surprise when after tattooing crosses on six children aged 10 to 17 when they were arrested and hauled off to jail. The crime was reported by the biological mother of two of the children that the Bartels had custody of. The tattoos were administered over thanksgiving and when a couple of … Continue reading

Could homeschoolers be caught up in truancy sweeps

Across the country, school districts are cracking down on truants. Students are being handcuffed and escorted to school. Parents are given citations. Parents are even arrested and even serve jail time. In many of these cases, these students are truly truants. They skip school often, they find mischief elsewhere, their parents enable them by allowing the least little cough of sneeze to keep them home bound. Other parents have no idea truancy is happening. As stated in the Dallas News, Students who make a habit of skipping are on the fast track to dropping out. And in a district with … Continue reading

Update of California Homeschool Ruling

The ruling that essentially said homeschooling in California without a teaching degree is illegal, is headed back to court. The second court of appeals will re-hear the case. This new trial is being referred to as a “second chance for homeschooling”, with homeschool advocated declaring that homeschoolers are “safe” and being hailed as a sign that homeschoolers are getting “their message across”. This re-visitation of the California judgment is largely due to a petition for rehearing the case. The Homeschool Legal Defense Association along the California Homeschool Network, Christian Home Educators Association of California, Private and Home Educators of California … Continue reading

Supreme Court Ruling: Use of Race in Admission

In my last article I discussed the two public school districts in Kentucky that were under a lawsuit for using race to determine a student’s admission into a specific school. Several universities have also used race to determine student admission. The University of Georgia Atlanta revised its admission policy that used race to determine admission. Several white women had used the school or threatened lawsuits for discrimination. The women felt that had they been black or men, they would have been admitted. The student body at the school is mainly female and generously accepts male applicants. The school now does … Continue reading
