As of right now, and for quite some time New Jersey has the state where all homeschoolers wish they lived. Homeschooling in New Jersey

This is not legal advice. As someone who lives in a state that is highly regulated, I cannot emphasize enough the need for you to advocate for yourself and make a point to know your state laws. While the school district will most likely provide you with a printed copy of the laws and regulations for home schooling, a local home schooling group can be a valuable asset when it comes to navigating your way through the system. What is interesting about blogging on laws in New Jersey is that legal precedents and statues have more to do with what … Continue reading

Two Arguments for Teens to Wear Belts

At 62 years old, General Larry Platt shuffled into the American Idol audition, as the last “contestant” for the day, obviously too old to be in the competition. I was afraid he was there to make fun of him. There was definitely some fun had, but the General had the joke on us, or at least on our teenagers. He sung and performed an original song called “pants off the ground”. Wanna hear it? Here it goes: Pants on the ground Pants on the ground Lookin’ like a fool with your pants on the ground With the gold in your … Continue reading

The judgment stated that the girl lacked “some youthful characteristics”, and “appeared to reflect her mother’s rigidity on questions of faith”. The child has been ordered to attend a public school where she “must begin to critically evaluate multiple systems of belief and behavior and cooperation in order to select, as a young adult, which of those systems will best suit her own needs.” (South Dakota Voice) Had … Continue reading

Schools Using Obama Inauguration as Teaching Tool

At noon tomorrow hundreds of thousands of children living on the East Coast will put down their books and lunch trays and gather in front of massive television screens to watch history unfold. Florida Governor Charlie Crist wrote a letter last week to state Education Commissioner Eric Smith asking him to encourage schools to take a break from studies on Tuesday, when Barack Obama takes the oath of office. The Republican governor’s letter read in part: “While the inauguration of any American President and the peaceful transition of our national leadership are admired around the globe, next week’s event symbolizes … Continue reading

Proposed NJ Homeschool Legislation

When I reported the finding of the New Jersey Homeschool Association the other day, I promised more information regarding the proposed homeschool legislation. The exact proposal can be found here Here is my interpretation of the exact proposal. Parents must submit a notarized letter to the school district each year that holds the name and age of students, the person who would be teaching them, the address and phone number of the homeschool location, and evidence that required subjects are taught in addition to up-to-date immunization records. They would have to prove that there is no one living in the … Continue reading
