My New Favorite Homeschooling Tool

When it comes to curriculum we are as eclectic as they come. Up until this year however, unit studies were my favorite. The only problem I had with unit studies was, for lack of a better word, storage. Storing and organizing the completed works could get tricky. Now, a lot of people may not have to, nor want to, keep completed works. I live in Minnesota though, which doesn’t have high regulations but does have moderate ones. I have two choices. I can either have someone come into my house once a year and look at what we have, are, … Continue reading

A Unit Study Starter on the Vikings

The Vikings are a very interesting people to study in part because so much of their history is related to them pillaging and thieving from other peoples. They were particularly fond of picking on monasteries–presumably because monks were not so feisty. However, if you read extensively on the Vikings, what you discover is that they were a deeply family oriented people. They were also fairly religious although it’s notable that they stopped raiding surrounding areas when they converted to Christianity. Here are a few ideas for studying the Vikings. Geography Vikings, as you probably are aware are from the Northern … Continue reading

Top 5 Resources of the Day: Novemeber 28

Welcome to today’s edition of Top 5 Resources. Today’s theme is all about science. I find that home educators tend to fall into three categories. The first is people who don’t do science experiments for fear of getting messy and/or blowing something up. The second is people who mix baking soda and vinegar together and call that science. And the third are people who genuinely understand science. Regardless of where you fall, there’s something on this list for you! If you have a suggestion for the top 5 resources theme, please let me know! 1. Newton’s Apple Newton’s Apple is … Continue reading

Does Unschooling Really Work?

Mary Ann Romans, asked me in the forums about unschooling and what it was exactly that children learn. How is it that kids will get to being the brilliant and capable people that they can be–if there’s no curriculum? Our Experience With Unschooling The longer I homeschool, the more towards unschooling I lean. Unschooling is not practical where we live and I’ve mentioned before that I in fact have yet to meet someone who lives in this state and unschools. The regulations are simply too demanding and not even creative wording can sneak in true unschooling. However, I’ve written before … Continue reading

Breastfeeding and Jury Duty

I have found myself in a most unpleasant situation. I will start by saying the simple fact of the matter is, I cannot serve. I have a gazillion and one reasons why I cannot but suffice it to say that as Murphey’s Law would have it, they called the one week I just can’t go. Every single babysitter known to man (or at least known to my adorable, but slightly difficult two year old twins) is busy and gone. Had they given me a summons the week earlier or the week later it would’ve been fine. But they didn’t and … Continue reading

Homeschool Class of 2007

It’s graduation time, and I thought it was only fitting and proper to give a few nods in the direction of homeschoolers graduating from high school. Some homeschoolers will have quiet family celebrations and silently pass into the world of adult work life or college. Some homeschoolers will graduate en masse with hundreds of other homeschoolers, many of whom they have never met, but used the same online curriculum. Other homeschoolers will graduate with students they have walked the homeschooling journey with, gone to field trips, also and shared their proms. A couple of years ago, I attended the graduation … Continue reading

Colleges and Universities That Have Accepted Homeschoolers

Today’s blog is a continuation from my last one regarding homeschoolers and college. While many colleges are now considering homeschoolers, I thought that you might like to see a list of schools that have accepted homeschool students. I found the following list from The Everything Homeschooling Book which has compiled a list of colleges / universities that have accepted homeschoolers. Not that this list is complete of all colleges, but it does list some well recognized schools that your child may be considering. If the school that your child is looking at is not listed on here still contact that … Continue reading
