Homeschooling around the World: The Americasby Andrea Hermitt | More from this Blogger 11 Apr 2008 06:35 AM This article is part of my series on homeschooling around the world. The reason for discussing this is because it has come to my attention that people all over the world don't realize that homeschooling is an option for them, plus Americans don't realize that homeschooling is not a unique phenomenon. In the Americas, homeschooling is flourishing, but it is not without opposition. American Homeschooling is often used as the model of homeschooling in other countries. Homeschooling in the United States Of course it is no secret that homeschooling is prospering in the United Stated in spite of opposition from governmental agencies and teachers unions. Homeschooling is governed by each individual states with some states having more restrictions than others. Homeschooling is legal in all states in one form or another. Homeschooling is also legal in the U.S. Virgin Islands. To homeschool a parent must get approval to homeschool from the commissioner or education or to apply for accreditation to operate as a private school. Homeschooling in Canada Canada: Much like the United States, Canada has a thriving homeschooling movement which is completely legal. There are probably more than 30,000 homeschoolers in Canada. Homeschooling in South America Homeschooling is relatively new in South America and many countries have small but growing movements. There is a new and growing homeschool association in Guatemala. There is a small number of homeschooling families in Brazil who actively battle for the right to teach their children at home. Hebron Ministries supports homeschooling families in South America. Mexico has no real education laws and so homeschooling is flourishing. There is also a somewhat new and growing homeschool movement in the Dominican Republic.
