Worried About Socialization?

The question of socialization as it relates to homeschoolers never seems to die down. I believe this question has been asked and answered to the naysayers multiple times. However, well intentioned parents are concerned with this aspect when making the decision to homeschool. We live in a society where homeschooling is the exception and not the rule. Parents considering homeschooling have questions about all areas of homeschooling which include socialization. Public and private schools have after school programs, clubs, sports and outlets for the children to mingle and interface with other students and teachers. It only stands to reason that … Continue reading

I Think We Can Lay the Socialization Myth to Rest

According to a study of Canadian Home-Educated Adults, socialization of homeschoolers is a non-issue. This is a follow-up of a study done in 1994 that only had positive things to say about homeschooling. 15 years later they re-surveyed as many of these same people as possible and it showed that adult homeschoolers were pretty content with their lives. In short, the study revealed the following: *Out of 226 the respondents to the second survey, only three people had not completed nor were working on their eduction. These three people were gainfully employed. *Homeschooled adults were more likely than the general … Continue reading

Joking About Homeschooling

Homeschoolers are the butt of late night tv jokes, a writer recently stated. In fact, Jay leno has been dubbed Educator of the year video that discusses ineffective schools are. Personally, I think this writer was reaching. Is Ali Lohan Really Homeschooling?

Just Jared.com points out that Ali Lohan, younger sister of Lindsay Lohan (who was also homeschooled) was out on a school night. There are pictures of her in the evening in sun glasses, shorts and a t-shirt. The article discusses a People Magazine website that questions if Ali is socializing instead of homeschooling. Am I the only one getting confused here? The general public’s biggest worry about homeschooling is lack of socialization. A girl goes out for a little fun, and now she isn’t schooling. Really people!!!! Make up your mind… But I digress. My purpose was not to point … Continue reading

When Homeschool Kids Worry about Socialization

This morning as I drove my kids to their homeschool program my son said, “My friend … said homeschool kids are unsocialized”. Considering the fact that the person in question is also homeschooled, I had to wonder why he would say such a thing. It was akin to my mother’s old habit of telling “yo-mama” jokes… to her own kids. I used to always stop her and say, “You know you’re talking about yourself right”. Of course, that is what made her jokes really funny. Somehow having a homeschooled child inform a bunch of other homeschooled children that they are … Continue reading

Homeschooling Results: Strong Secure Kids

Homeschoolers spend a lot of time discussing test results, and positive socialization of homeschoolers. We like to show that are kids come out normal, or even better than normal. We like to reassure ourselves that we did the right thing by homeschooling. I especially like reading about homeschooled kids who have done something great with their lives like written a book or started a company. I like reading about gifted homeschoolers who shoot through the curriculum and homeschoolers who get great college scholarships. I also like looking at my own children and comparing where they are with where they would … Continue reading
