GoDaddy $20 off $75

Do you have your own domain? They’ve come down so much in price that people have them for a lot of different reasons. My extended family has one that lets us store addresses, keep up to date with each other’s news, and share photos. We have some future plans to expand it, but for now, it’s a nice thing to visit when we’re missing each other. You’re welcome to take a look. My husband also maintains several websites for his music. It’s his passion, and something that is important to him. I also run our Scout Troop‘s site, and a … Continue reading

Scrapbooking: Put a Butterfly on it

My friend Grace is a die-hard quilter. Her work and the work of her compadres is beautiful, and every project seems to come out a masterpiece. “Don’t you ever make a mistake?” I asked her. “Sure we do. We just put a butterfly on it,” she answered. I looked at her with no understanding whatsoever. She went on to explain that they weren’t necessarily mistakes, but occasions for butterflies. Her appliqués were often not planned, but cover-ups! The same rule applies in scrapbooking. They’re not mistakes, they’re opportunities. In the example here, I screwed up the title. I tried to … Continue reading

REI Clearance – This Week Only

I like to camp. Yes, really. When we were kids, some of my favorite memories are of camping. It’s funny, because my dad’s not the kind you’d think of as a camper. Yet I can remember heading up to Yosemite (back when it was still fairly uncrowded) and all of us sleeping in one big family tent. That part wasn’t the best, but the camping experience itself was good. We hiked to the top of Yosemite Falls, through seemingly endless switchbacks. We finally made it! Another time a neighbor loaned us his now cabin at Sugarloaf Mountain. We got snowed … Continue reading

Free NRA Membership for Active Duty Military

The National Rifle Association exists to “promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis.” To that end, they offer a lot of educational programs for people of all ages. They have a stringent safety course, and a youth program that is first class. Since 1871, the NRA has fought to maintain the right to keep and bear arms, and to improve the accuracy and safety awareness of the gun-owning public. With millions of members and steady growth, they will continue to do so. Education is their primary goal. I heartily recommend their Eddie the Eagle safety program for children … Continue reading

The Sunday Evening Review: January 21, 2007

We saw many changes in the homeschool blog this week. We said see ya’ round to Valorie, who is writing for another families.com blog, and hello to a brand new blogger, Karen. Keep an eye out for guest blogs from Valorie. We also spent some time visiting with bloggers from other categories. Our blogs meandered through different topics and issues in the homeschooling world, but for the most part, one good blog led to another. We started the week with a guest blog by Julie Gentry entitled Trusting Your Instincts: Know When to Say No in which Julie discussed how … Continue reading

Homeschooling and Scouting: David Finds a Troop

We’d been trying to Lone Scout for two years, with some success. Part of the reason we’d chosen to go it alone was that David had superior math skills, but was struggling in reading and self-conscious about it. By the time Elisha was old enough to begin Scouting, I was firmly convinced that the benefits of being in a troop were far outweighed by the negative socialization. Then came Paula’s little note on our online homeschool list. It was just a small blurb, really. Letting people know that her son had joined a Boy Scout Troop that was homeschool-friendly and … Continue reading

Homeschooling and Scouting: Our Story

If you’ve been following my posts, you know I can be a bit on the protective side with my children. We are careful with what they read, what they watch, and with whom they associate. It’s out of a desire to protect their innocence, and thus far it’s working. After hearing too many horror stories, we reluctantly went to check out the local Scouting troops in our area. Each of them had something that I couldn’t reconcile with our parenting and homeschooling style. Some conflicted with our faith, some were boy-led, and another simply had too many undisciplined children. It … Continue reading
