Homeschool Legal Defense Association Stands against Obama

There has been a buzz on the internet lately about Obama and The Home School Legal Defense Association, but it has nothing to do with an endorsement. It seems that in an effort to reach your Evangelical Christians, Obama's campaign is attempting to launch a program call Joshua Generation Project. The purpose of this project is to reach young people on poverty, Darfur, climate, and war.

This campaign will never make it public, or at least in its current incarnation as The Homeschool Legal Defense has accused them of infringing on their group "Generation Joshua" that works with Christian youth to get them active in politics. While "Generation Joshua" has been trademarked by the HSLDA, they do not have a coup on the words "Joshua", and "Generation". Yet HSLDA has taken swift legal action against the Obama campaign. And so the Homeschool Community has formally introduced itself to the very possible next president of the United States. (The closest thing I could find to Joshua Generation project on the Obama website is Generation Obama... perhaps this lawsuit is now moot.)

This is not the only problem Senator Obama is having with the HSLDA. HSLDA co-founder, chancellor of Patrick Henry College, and general counsel of the Home School Legal Defense Association, recently wrote a letter to the editor of the Washington Post dated Friday May 23, 2008 entitled "Why I Fear an Obama Presidency". In the article, he states, "I have every reason to believe that an Obama presidency would be particularly harmful to the American family and the home-school community." His main reason for "fearing" Obama is his support of the ratification of the U.N. Convention of the Rights of the Child, which is at odds with parental rights. (This was originally supported by the Clinton White House).

It is true that Obama is supported this issue, but you have to understand that in politics, no issue stands alone. This is just a small part of a larger bill (The Global Poverty Act) that seeks to eradicate poverty.

As homeschoolers, I urge you to vote your heart and mind and not be a sheep to the great shepherds also known as the HSLDA. Do your own research and check out Obama's take on Family issues as well as McCain's (I could not find anything specific about family) before you believe what you are told.
