Homeschool Laws for the State of Delaware: Option 1

*Before I begin this article regarding homeschooling options for Delaware, I want to begin by stating that it is your responsibility to research the law for yourself. I am relaying the available and current information that is subject to change. I have provided many links that will enable you to view the current laws online and to help put you in touch with local area and organizational support groups. *

Delaware has three legal options for homeschooling. This article will focus on Option 1.

The compulsory age of school attendance is between the ages of 5 and 16. School may be delayed if it is in the best interest of the child and as long as there is previous school authorization.

With Option 1, the parent will establish a "single family homeschool" where the parents or guardians will educate their children mainly in their own home or residence. They are required to teach for 180 days each year, and they are also required to teach the same subjects that are administered in public school. Parents are not required to have any specific training or qualifications to teach. Parents are required to give a detailed attendance report to the Department of Education on or before the date of July 31st each year. You are also required to file an annual statement of enrollment by the last school day in September. Both reports are required to be submitted on forms that are authorized by the Department of Education. There are no testing requirements to be met.
