Homeschool Class of 2009

Each Spring I like to highlight stories of homeschool graduates. Some graduate in large groups with other homeschoolers. Others graduate on their own. Some graduate at the typical age as any other student. some finish highschool and college at very young ages. Many get into top colleges, and some go on with their lives. Here are some homeschool graduates in the news for the 2008-2009 school year. In Mount Vernon, WA, 30 homeschool kids graduated together in a Knox County homeschool ceremony. Graduates included a couple of kids graduating a year early. Some are planning to go to brick and … Continue reading

Homeschooling Results: Strong Secure Kids

Homeschoolers spend a lot of time discussing test results, and positive socialization of homeschoolers. We like to show that are kids come out normal, or even better than normal. We like to reassure ourselves that we did the right thing by homeschooling. I especially like reading about homeschooled kids who have done something great with their lives like written a book or started a company. I like reading about gifted homeschoolers who shoot through the curriculum and homeschoolers who get great college scholarships. I also like looking at my own children and comparing where they are with where they would … Continue reading

Ideas for Homeschool Graduations

As another school year comes to a close, another group of homeschoolers and their parents draw the homeschooling experience to an end. It is time for homeschool graduation ceremonies. Many homeschoolers prefer to graduate in groups of 10-20 in joint ceremonies with other homeschoolers they have socialized with over the years. Students who participated in Co-ops and other homeschool programs together like to graduate together. Others like to go solo and graduate as an individual. Here are some homeschool graduation ideas for homeschoolers who want to “graduate” individually. Have an Un-Graduation Ceremony: If your homeschoolers were actually unschoolers, living and … Continue reading

Homeschooling Week in Review May 12, 2007 – May 18, 2007

This past week on the families.com homeschooling blog, I touched on several interesting topics beginning with some of the reasons I am glad I homeschool. A difficult morning prompted me to write about thoughts of putting the kids back in school. I also gave my top curriculum pick for several subjects and compiled a list of things homeschoolers can do over the summer. Here is the families.com homeschooling week in review May 12, 2007 – May 18, 2007. 12 May 2007 Reasons I am Glad I Homeschool: Unnecessary Competition by Andrea Hermitt is a post about traditionally schooled children taking … Continue reading

Celebrating Accomplishments

Myra Turner reminded us yesterday about remembering to celebrate educational milestones while homeschooling in her article, Celebrating School Rites of Passage. How I neglected to address Kindergarten Graduation when writing my post on Homeschool Graduation, I will never know. After reading the article, I realized that we were letting my daughter slip from elementary school to middle school with absolutely no fanfare. For shame! Not only that, but we did the same to our son two years ago. Needless to say, this weekend will be one of celebration for our family. Since our kids, will both be transitioning to a … Continue reading

Celebrating School Rites of Passage

My son wants a graduation ceremony. One of his cousins is graduating from elementary school today. Another graduated from middle school last week. Tyler refuses to understand why he’s not having a ceremony. After all, he’s graduating from kindergarten. I have explained to him that normally there is a celebration when you pass from preschool to elementary school, from elementary to middle and from middle to high school. I reminded him that since he didn’t attend preschool he missed the first rite of passage. He then asked, “Why didn’t we have a celebration?” He’s absolutely right, we should have. Homeschooled … Continue reading
