Home schooled Highschooler on your own?

I just encountered a question from a homeshooled high schooler who wanted to go to college. He feared that his mom had not taught him everything he might need to know to go to college, and felt that he was on his own in completing his education. He wanted to know what his next step should be.

If you are a high school homeschooler and find yourself feeling uncertain about your chances of getting into college, I have a few suggestions for you.

Contact the colleges you are hoping to attend. Find out exactly what they require of applicants.

Look at all of your existing credits, classes, certificates, and projects. Do not over look anything you have done since 8th grade. Remember all of your field trips, church activities, scouts, and summer camps.

Match up what you have done with what is required of you. Match your list of what you have done to what is required of you. Be a little creative if you have to, but do not go overboard. Make sure it is believable.

Determine what, if anything is missing. You will be surprised how much you have actually accomplished without realizing it. List the course work that is missing from your portfolio. When you have filled in all of the holes, this is the same portfolio that you will turn into colleges.

Go to your local community college and register for non-matriculated classes. These classes will not only cover your high school requirements, but also give you college credits. If you cannot find the required courses at the community college, look into job experience, and possibly tutors. You also have the option in many colleges of auditing the class, instead of taking it for college credit.

Compile all of your work, credits, and projects into a college portfolio and apply to the colleges of your choice.
