Yesterday I mentioned that my children are currently studying the modern time period and listed books that we are reading, or plan to read. Next year, we are going back to the Ancient Times, another period that does not have many historical fiction books, (unlike the Medieval/ Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic time periods). I figure I had better start building my library now.

Here are some historical fiction books that will make good reads for the ancient time period.

The Growing up in Ancient (insert country here) series includes all the important topics: customs, schooling, family life, food, clothing, etc., but from a young person's perspective." (Amazon.com) Titles include Growing Up in Ancient Greece, Growing up in Ancient Rome, Growing up in Ancient Egypt, Growing up in Ancient China, and much more.

Religion and history converge in the following historical/ religious novels: King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba is a beautifully illustrated account of the King Solomon and his wife. Ancient Times: A Watts Guide for Children includes stories of Abraham, Jesus, and more. Hittite Warrior also gives a brilliant account of the times of the Old Testament.

Egyptian history is about much more than King Tut. Most lessons on Egyptian history seldom strays from his world. God King: A Story in the Days of King Hezekiah is a testament to that fact that all Egyptian history did not revolve around the great king. The book, Shadow Hawk tells about and Egyptian soldier and officer named Rahotep.

Ancient Science is also addressed in Archimedes and the Door to Science. In addition, this may be a good year to study the Bible as literature and to look at historic and archaeological parallels.
