Best Apps for Preschoolers

Over half of preschoolers have played with a tablet, iPad or smartphone. This technology is not only taking adults and teens by storm but little ones as well. Applications for these devices are being designed for children as young as babies. Many are educational, engaging, and fun. In moderation, these apps can hold value. Instead of a child watching TV, a child can now interact with the screen and be a part of the game. As with anything balance is key. Make sure your child is playing outdoors and with others and not sitting in front of an iPad or … Continue reading

Favorite Books for Preschoolers

Reading bedtime stories is a wonderful tradition. It is hard to keep up with it in our busy lives. I must admit that I do not read bedtime stories every night to my children. However, a story at the end of the day is best way to drift off to sleep. It is relaxing and a wonderful way to spend some quiet time with your children. Some books are classics and find their way into the hearts of children. Here is a short list of the books that are a favorite for the children in my home. Please share any … Continue reading

Back to School Books

If your child is starting school there are some great books that will help him to prepare for this big event in his life. You may have a child who is excited or you may have a child who is a little fearful. This may be your child’s first year of school or it could be their third year. For some children every year is difficult for them until they get the hang of the routine. After all, they have had the summer off with a completely different schedule. They have not had homework either. Bedtime did not come with … Continue reading

Little Critter Books

I have always stressed the importance of reading in my house. I would encourage it at every opportunity. Story time was a big deal. Every day we would take time out to do this. It was loved by all in my house. In the evening there was also story time. It was a daily ritual and because of that, I believe, I had good readers around me. Not only did my house have good readers, but imaginations ran wild here. It was a good thing. There were stories created by the people among me that I have saved and treasured … Continue reading

Home School Blogger Spotlight: Ready. Set. Read!

Teaching a child how to read can be a daunting task. As a homeschooler and writer about homeschooling topics, one of the most popular questions behind teaching math is teaching how to teach a child to read. Many are intimidated by the task. It does not make things easier that a student is to reading as a leaf to the wind. I had one child who taught himself how to read, one who struggled and currently one who gravitates to numbers, and one more who can “read” her name at two. So where’s a homeschooling mom to turn for advice … Continue reading

Rainy Day Fun for Preschoolers

Summer may have officially started on Monday, but you would never know by looking at the massive puddles sitting on our street. It may be summer, but that doesn’t mean Mother Nature is taking three months off from watering the world. When summer storms come barreling through and you are bombarded with bored preschoolers suffering from cabin fever, you need to be prepared. Here are some rainy day ideas: Cook: Instead of chasing preschoolers out of the kitchen, invite them in and put them to work. Get out your recipe books and have the kids pick a few dishes they … Continue reading

Great Preschool Books about Summer

Summer is still officially a few days away, but a recent day or two or warm weather here has me thinking about summer story times. I’m stretching, I know: June where I live is wet and wild and not necessarily all that summery. However, it’s time to think about great books to read on vacation with your preschooler. How about those long, long rides on boats and trains and planes? Yes, I thought that you might be looking for a few ideas. We enjoy beach-themed books. For the younger preschooler, I recommend books like Down By the Bay, a bookish … Continue reading

Developing a Taste for Living Books

While the historical fiction area of my local library, I notice a woman talking. She was in a little sitting area behind me slouched on a couch. Across from her was this boy about 12 years old deeply involved in a book. I wondered for a moment if I should go save this kid from this crazy lady talking to herself. She then directed her attention on the boy. I stepped in a bit closer just in case I had my opportunity to be a superhero. Turns out the boy just learned the art of ignoring his mother. Finally he … Continue reading

Retro Fun for Preschoolers

Yes, I’m having eighties flashbacks these days. Bear with me. If you’re seeking an eighties flashback yourself, preferably with your preschooler, read on. I enjoy reliving my childhood with my daughter. Although the hair was large and the hairspray was available in unimaginable quantities, there are a few things about the eighties that bear repeating. For those of us who are – ahem – getting on and were children of the eighties, here are a few ways to relive the good times. Beaded bracelets and pins: Do you remember those little beaded pins that you put on your shoes and … Continue reading

Great Books for Spring

We’ve been planting seeds around here, and although there is still sporadic slush falling from the sky, it definitely feels like spring is just around the corner. Here are a few of my favorite spring books to read with preschoolers. Debbie Ouellett’s How Robin Saved Spring is a lazy bedtime or afternoon book, since it is long. In this book, the seasons are sisters. The winter sister wants the spring sister to sleep forever, so that winter can last forever. Robins seem to be a popular theme for spring stories. My Spring Robin by Anne Rockwell is one of my … Continue reading
