Going to the Mattresses

Making the decision to home school is not easy. You know you’re flying in the face of traditional education, and you know that you’ll be making huge sacrifices in time and energy. You’re prepared to rearrange your entire schedule – in fact, your entire life – so you can begin this new journey. You get the books, you figure out a study schedule, and you feel as though you’ve thought through every contingency. You’re totally set. And then it happens. Someone, usually someone who cares about you and only wants what’s best for you, challenges your decision, and you find … Continue reading

Saving Money When Shopping for a New Bed

It is time for my daughter to get a new bed. We spent on Saturday two weeks ago visiting a couple of stores and pricing out twin beds. The requirements for us were that the twin bed should be white, probably wood, have a headboard and a foot board, and be sturdy enough to carry her through until she leaves for college and maybe beyond. Going shopping online and in the retail stores was a real eye opener. We hadn’t shopped for a new bed for about eight or nine years. Since then, it seems, the quality has gone down … Continue reading

Value Versus Price – When Not To Go Cheap

It is often said that you get what you pay for. Sometimes this statement is true, and sometimes it isn’t. I often find myself saving money at the grocery store because many store brand products, at least at the grocery stores where I shop, taste as good as or better than their pricier name brand counterparts. However, there are certain purchases where getting a good value does not necessarily mean going with the lowest sticker price. Early last year, when it was time for my oldest son to transition out of his infant car seat (which is of high quality) … Continue reading

Veteran’s Day Sales – 2011

Veteran’s Day started as a way to honor World War I veterans. In the United States, the banks and post offices will be closed on this national holiday, and many people will have the day off of work. Every year, retailers try to take advantage of this day off by having Veteran’s Day Sales. Here are a few you can check out this year. Ideally, Veteran’s Day is supposed to be a tribute to all veterans, of any war. It is a day to show appreciation for the brave men and women who are currently serving in the armed forces. … Continue reading

Insurer Pays Tornado Claim After All

Every once in a while, public outrage has an effect on the decisions made by insurance companies. An insurer has decided to reconsider its original decision to deny the claims of a social worker who was injured as a result of the tornado in Joplin, Missouri. Mark Lindquist is a social worker. When the tornado hit Joplin, Missouri, on May 22, 2011, he was doing his job. He, and another social worker, drove to a group home in order to help out three men who lived there, (and who had Down Syndrome). The home did not have a basement, so … Continue reading
