Fun With Blubber

Okay, so you didn’t know blubber could be fun. Or the thought of playing with lard isn’t appealing. I get it. But this is a great way to demonstrate to your kids how an insulator like blubber works to keep an animal warm. My son has suggested that we make coats out of blubber–but I don’t recommend it. You will need: Two ziploc bags. . .gallon size worked well Lard or shortening A thermometer (not necessary for little ones but very helpful for doing more ‘scientific’ study) a bucket of ice water gorilla tape other insulators Directions: Fill one bag … Continue reading

Groups Campaign Against Canadian Seal Hunt

This year, the Canadian government has set the quota for its yearly seal hunt higher than ever. The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) set the quota at 468,200 harp, Grey, and hood seals. That is an increase of almost 150,000 from last year. Why would people want to kill the seals? There are a lot of products that can be made from seals such as fur coats, bags, and clothing, but still others want them for the meat, oil, blubber and even seal oil for the making of some omega-3 pills. Reports say there are about 6,000 seal … Continue reading

Sniff, Sniff…the Best Tearjerker Movie List – Part 3

I saved the best for last. These are the movies that turned me into a big sobbing, crying, wailing mass of blubber. 3. Saving Private Ryan My little sister and her best friend wanted to see some girly movie at the theater. Not being in the mood, I took them anyhow, but went to see Saving Private Ryan alone. Most people who saw this would say the ending scene, in which Captain John Miller (played by Tom Hanks) dies after having tromped over half of Europe to find Private Ryan, was the tearjerking part. After all, Captain Miller and his … Continue reading

How the Oil Spill Will Affect Your Trip to San Francisco

Nothing says welcome to the beach more than a bunch of huge white signs that tell you to stay out of the water—NOT. Yet, that’s exactly what tens of thousands of visitors to San Francisco have been greeted with the past few days. The signs went up shortly after a cargo ship struck the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, and dumped 58,000 gallons of oil in San Francisco Bay. The spill—-the largest of its kind in nearly two decades—-happened last week and since then business owners have been scrambling to assure out-of-town visitors that the City by the Bay is still … Continue reading

East Coast Whale Watching Adventures

It’s no secret; whale watching tours abound in places such as Hawaii and Alaska, but watching a humpback whale breach from the murky depths of the Atlantic Ocean is not something travelers get to see everyday. Just ask vacationers who visit the waters off of Virginia Beach. The whale-watching season wraps up along the East Coast at the end of the month. Which means you still have a few weeks to gather the family and sign up for a tour. The Rudee Flipper, which departs from the Virginia Fishing Center at Rudee Inlet on the south end of Virginia Beach … Continue reading

Our Not So Irreconcilable Differences

Yesterday my husband and I celebrated our tenth anniversary. Over dinner he asked if it’s been everything I hoped it would be. My honest answer was, “Yes, and it gets better every year.” Trust me, we’ve had our differences, but my husband and I decided before we got married that divorce was not an option. When we made our vows to each other and to God, we entered into a covenant. No amount of “Irreconcilable differences” would tear us apart. As it turns out, most of our differences weren’t irreconcilable. When you are committed to somebody, you do whatever it … Continue reading
