My Five Favorite Tips to Avoid Burnout

I did not listen to advice telling me to sleep when the baby sleeps. Instead I cleaned. I did not listen to the advice to take time for myself. Instead I planned more lessons and tried to squeeze in some work. I did not listen to advice telling me to not worry about the little messes. Rome wasn’t cleaned in a day. Instead I drove myself to the brink trying to get my overflowing “to-do” list done in one day. Then one day I found myself burned out. I was unable to move. Things that were once a joy were … Continue reading

Barefoot Contessa Gets Burned

Food Network star Ina Garten, a.k.a. the “Barefoot Contessa,” is feeling the burn, but it’s not from logging extra miles on a treadmill. Obviously. Rather, the celebrity chef got scorched earlier this week when she was forced to down a huge helping of humble pie during the latest chapter of her Make-a-Wish Foundation debacle. As you remember from my previous post, Garten got herself into quite a pickle last month when she TWICE turned down a 6-year-old cancer patient’s request to meet her. The highfalutin Food Network star was then virtually flogged by millions of fans, who took to the … Continue reading

Fighting Feelings of Failure

Moms love their kids. The love is such that a mom is constantly concerned with her child’s well being. A mom feels a vested interest in every part of her child’s life. When a mom takes on the task of homeschooling she takes on a greater responsibility that is pure joy yet is not without pain. When we go through dark times we often feel we are alone. We also begin the dangerous road of comparing ourselves to other moms who appear to have it together. This causes feelings of failure and temptations to leave homeschooling behind. When our house … Continue reading

Feeling Burned Out?

Feeling burned out can lead to a very grumpy mommy. Grumpy mommies hardly make good homeschoolers. This can cause a year to dive into failure or at best just barely getting by. Making it by the skin of your teeth, will not result in a relief that it’s over but a sense of defeat and guilt that you didn’t provide your children the best of you. Your feelings of stress will bleed over to your children and they may have a poor attitude about school. Soon you will go round and round between bad attitudes or just simply giving up … Continue reading

Calories Burned: Did You Know?

Did you know that in everything that we do we are burning calories? Yes, that is right. Even the little insignificant movements that we make or even just sitting still, we burn calories. We have been given amazing bodies. Our bodies work in a way that even when we are doing nothing, we are doing something. Our bodies never stop working. Of course, the more active that we are physically, the more calories we will burn. Just in case you were not aware here are some examples of just how many calories are burned in 30 minutes during the everyday … Continue reading

What of the Best Things About a Home Business–Fewer Meetings

In keeping with our on-going discussions here on the Home Business blog celebrating the pluses and joys of operating a home business, I thought I would share one of my very FAVORITE things about working from home as opposed to working in a traditional office job and setting–I definitely don’t miss all those meetings! Having spent many years working in and for nonprofit organizations, I’ve spent more time sitting in staff, committee and board meetings than I even care to remember. I love that I can make decisions in my little home business without having to call a meeting, set … Continue reading

Two Studies About Protein

Dr. Wayne Campbell and his colleagues at Purdue’s University Laboratory for Integrative Research in Nutrition, Fitness, and Aging conducted a weight loss study of 46 overweight or obese women. The women were instructed to follow one of two reduced-calorie diets. Protein was 18% of the caloric intake in one group’s diet; it was 30% of the caloric intake of the second group’s diet. Each group consumed six ounces of lean pork per day for twelve weeks. It was their only meat source. The result was that the women who ate a higher percentage of protein were better at maintaining lean … Continue reading

Opposite Sex Friendships: Playing with Fire

I’ll warn you ahead of time.  You may not agree with anything I have to say in this blog.  In fact, you might think I’m living in the dark ages…but that’s okay. The issue I’m talking about today is friendships with the opposite sex.  But please understand ahead of time that I am coming at this from the angle of seeing the destruction it almost cost my marriage and the fact I have been married for 21 ½ years. My opinion is that having a friendship with someone of the opposite sex is playing with fire.  Think about how many … Continue reading

Get Inspired to Serve

Do you ever feel a little burned out in your calling? I have had that happen to me. Especially in callings like a president of an organization or being in the bishopric. Maybe you’re tired of your spouse’s calling? That can happen too. I know that I can get into a mindset where I’m just tired of all the work that is expected of us, and therefore, I don’t want to put in the effort anymore. We have to be careful that we don’t get too bogged down. After all, we are doing the Lord’s work. We are on His … Continue reading

Fitness Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day around the corner, it might be the perfect time to give her the gift of health. Why not encourage her in the way of fitness? Of course, you have to be careful about this. You don’t want to hurt feelings. In fact, it’s probably a good idea to only give a fitness gift if your mother truly has a desire to make changes in her life or has already started to exercise. One of the best gifts you can give is a pedometer. It’s a great way to keep track of your steps and set goals. If … Continue reading
