What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger

There is a video on YouTube that has been getting a lot of attention. In the video, a group of children who are battling cancer lip-sync to a song by Kelly Clarkson that is called “Stronger”. Your Work, Your Worth

I just read a wonderful post by Richele McFarlin about how important it is to avoid taking on work that is not worth your time. I wholeheartedly agree, and I also think that sometimes home – based professionals have a tendency to underestimate what their time is worth simply because they feel so lucky to be able to work at home. It is a wonderful thing to be able to work at home, but it does not in any way diminish the value of your time. For example, if you are a writer who has been able to find and … Continue reading

When Your Work Drops Off

Working from home, especially as a writer, you can’t always rely upon getting work. In my particular job, it is less about getting work and more about how much I get. Toward the end of each year, things definitely drop off and suddenly I find the income isn’t as good as it had been. Now I really try to stay positive about things. So yesterday when I got an email from my editor, forewarning me that the next few week’s things would slow down, I had a choice to make. I could get down about it, I could complain or … Continue reading

Find Your Passion, Find Your Business

If you are thinking of making the switch to working at home, why not also make the switch to a different type of work. Work that inspires you, work that excites and interests you, work that seems a little less like work because you enjoy it so much. No one ever said that work can’t be fun and if you choose work that makes you happy, your quality of life will improve immensely. When you are choosing a home-based business, it is easy to be tempted to choose the option that you feel will make you the most money with … Continue reading

Does Your Child Want to Be a Writer?

I was a child who wanted to be a writer. I was a writer, in fact. When I was in elementary school, my best friend and I created plays that the entire class performed for the school. I published my first poems when I was a teen. Back then in the day, I did it the archaic way: I mailed my poems to journals (gasp)! These days, the internet has created new pathways for young writers. There’s blogging, of course. Your teen can even create a niche web site should he wish. He could go a la Charles Dickens and … Continue reading

Should Everyone in Your Family Do Chores?

One of the age-old questions for many families is concerning chores and children, to pay or not to pay? Actually, some families still aren’t sure how to handle the whole chore thing. Should children do chores? How much is too much? Should the entire family divide up the household chores? If you have children, taking care of a home could almost be a full-time job. The more children you have, the more responsibilities you have. Being a wife, mom of three children and a full-time writer I have my share of responsibilities. However what I refuse to do is attempt … Continue reading

Make Life & Fitness Easier for Yourself

Wouldn’t it be great if we had a magic wand that we could just wave that would make fitness easier to attain? I used to think that some people were just born fit and other people, well – we weren’t so lucky. Fitness is a state of mind, it’s who you want to be. It’s not just saying I want to be fit, it’s being active. In the words of a writer, fitness is about show, don’t tell. Lifestyle Choices When you make the choice to be more fit, you are talking about making lifestyle choices. The lifestyle choice could … Continue reading

Meet a Families.com Blogger – Lisa Pietsch!

As the former Community Manager, Lisa was the first person I met when I became acquainted with Families.com, and has become a good friend. Lisa, how fun to interview you today! How long have you blogged for Families.com? I’ve been with Families.com since September 26th, 2005. I believe we had about twenty-six members back then. When management announced they would be hiring bloggers, I applied for the topics of Food, Weight Loss and Disney. When they launched the blogs here in early December 2005, they hired me for all three topics as well as the position of Community Manager. Eventually, … Continue reading

Finding Joy in Your Home Based Business

I was speaking with a friend today about my Families.com blog and she suggested that I write a topic about finding joy in our home based business. Perhaps she could feel my tension over the telephone and knew I needed a pick me up. The last week has been one of the toughest ever in terms of my home business. Late last month, I was almost giddy as I started my new career as a freelance writer. Quite honestly, it is my dream job. It feeds my creative side and there is nothing better than sipping a “Love Potion #9” … Continue reading
