Perfectionism Is Keeping Me From Getting Things Done

As a perfectionist I often overwhelm myself. My good intentions always lead to half finished chores and messes I walk away from because I overwhelm myself. I have such high expectations, after all if a job is worth doing it’s worth doing right. That statement right there is my downfall. A typical project will go something like this: Today is a perfect day to clean the garage! I’ll go out in to the garage and start going through boxes and bags and shelves, bagging up stuff that can be donated, tossing things that are broken or missing pieces and then … Continue reading

When do I clean: Practical Changes

One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries. ~A. A. Milne I love that quote. It describes my personality entirely. You would be amazed at the items I find and become distracted by while attempting a task or to clean. I once found a Verizon rebate Visa card, sadly, it was expired. Another time I found an old box filled with cards and items I intended to put in a baby book for my third child. I never started it and she is now six years old. While, these finds are good for … Continue reading

Pairing Work and Homeschooling

Our fall schedule appears to be exploding, and so is my head. I’ve come to a realization that this is sometimes why people put their children in school: school is at one location and at a specific time. That seems so easy. Really, it’s not so bad. I’m just trying to wrap my head around our first official year of home learning, and my brain is exploding. That is all. At times like these, I wish I was a work at home or stay at home mom. However, I know that every life has different challenges. Stay at home moms … Continue reading

Do You Need to Back Off?

I’ve read and heard numerous posts and comments like the following: I can’t get Timmy to sit. He won’t do his work and he’s giving me attitude. He whines over everything. Homeschooling isn’t working. He wasn’t like this for the teacher. I cannot presume to know when someone’s homeschool is or isn’t working. But inevitably, I find some similarities in the stories each time I hear of one. For many of us parents who are products of the school system, it is hard to get out of thinking that school must include a desk, a certain amount of rigor, handwriting … Continue reading

Do Chores Have a Place in Homeschooling?

It seems that there is somewhat of a divide in the home schooling community on the issue of chores. I recently was talking to a mom who said, “I’d rather teach my daughter how to hire good help, than have her actually do housework.” I have to be honest and say that I was a little taken aback by that statement for numerous reasons, but she’s not the first person I’ve spoken to that seems to have that attitude. In part, I think it stems from the fact that home schooling mothers work full time teaching. On top of that, … Continue reading

Creating Thankful Traditions All Year Round

We often think of the Christmas season as a time to celebrate family. Thanksgiving is our time to be thankful. Valentine’s Day is a day to show love. Of course, while it’s good to have particular seasons and special days to celebrate these things, you can feel and show all of these emotions all year round! Whether you follow a particular religion or not, creating traditions of thankfulness is important. As many of us head off to sales, it’s a good time to stop and remember all that we have. The economy can be tight, and finding a job can … Continue reading

Finding Time For Work

One major challenge for home – based professionals who are also stay at home parents of young children is finding time to work. It is not always easy, but there are a few things that you can try to see if they work for your particular child or children and your unique family situation. Some of these are things that I have tried, and some are not. If you have other ways that you have found to secure additional work time for yourself, please feel free to share – I would love to hear about it. As a stay – … Continue reading

Discipling Young Hearts: Masculinity

When I first gave birth to a son I assumed his father would take the helm and teach him what it means to be a man of God. I did not think I was qualified as a woman to teach my son who to be a man. After all, I am not a man. I took the role of raising my girls as a mentor seriously since a woman is equipped to teach the girlhood. As the years went on I would ask my husband his advice for any questions I had regarding raising a son. Eventually, I realized that … Continue reading

The School System and ADHD

While, this is the homeschooling section, I think it’s important to keep up on what goes in the school system. I believe what goes on outside our homeschool world can have a direct effect on our homeschool. We should always be informed on new educational laws, requirements and controversial topics. The topic of ADHD is relevant in today’s school system since many children have been given the diagnosis after a teacher recommended a child be seen by a doctor. These children are more times than not put on drugs. This may alleviate the stress this child puts on a teacher … Continue reading

Swine Flu: Two Week Rebound?

In the last few days, two of my friends who’ve had swine flu have been talking about a “swine flu rebound”. To make a long story short, it seems that a good number of people who have had swine flu experience a reappearance of symptoms a couple of weeks after they thought they were better. One friend thought it might be linked to folks over-exerting themselves. I can understand that — when I’m sick, I suddenly get the urge to go out and do things and be social… specifically because I know I can’t or shouldn’t be doing those things. … Continue reading
