Charts, Charts, Who Needs a Chart?

Sometimes computers are a wonder of modern technology, and sometimes they are just plain frustrating. For me, the frustration comes when I need to use a program that I don’t normally work with and I need to learn how to use it quickly. While I use Excel for my monthly budgeting, I don’t love making graphs in Excel. Most of the time, all I need is a very simple graph to illustrate something that I am writing, and Excel has so many features that I get overwhelmed. If your pre-teen or teen needs to create a chart for a science … Continue reading

What Everyone Needs to Know About Genealogy

Genealogy is the art and science of exploring your family history. This provides you with the knowledge of who your ancestors were and where they came from. This is helpful information that everyone needs to know. Family historians and people who enjoy Genealogy go to extreme efforts to build on what they have found and continually add to their family history and the research results they find are usually kept in books that they plan to pass down through future generations. While some people simply are not interested in going to this much time and effort to find information, everyone … Continue reading

Seating Charts

One of the first things that many teachers do when they receive a new group of students is create a seating chart. In the beginning, teachers usually are not aware of problems that will exist when certain students are placed together. Therefore, the seating arrangement may change several times during the first semester. Primary grade teachers often create nametags and seating charts for their students before school even begins. Students feel more at ease when they come into the room and have a place that belongs to them. Middle and secondary teachers sometimes go without a specified seating chart until … Continue reading

Old Growth Charts Blamed for Fat Babies

I’m sad to say it, but some pediatricians are just not up to date on breastfeeding. I would understand, to some extent, misinformation from say, my general practitioner. I would understand misinformation from my dermatologist. After all, their specialty is not connected to babies per se. I don’t understand misinformation from pediatricians’ offices. (I do have to insert here that my childrens’ pediatrician is wonderful and I picked her because she is really very breastfeeding ’friendly’.) Every once in awhile someone will pop up in the forums or send me a PM saying that their doctor doesn’t think the baby … Continue reading

What Your Third Grader Needs To Learn

Third grade is a really important year as students will finish their early elementary years. Foundational reading and math skills are necessary to have success in future school years. Make sure your student is working at grade level. If you think there may be a potential problem with keeping up, speak to your teacher and/or seek an outside evaluation. Utilization of a tutor or specialized reading program might be necessary if your child is having difficulty. You might see that your child seems to know it all this year, and if they think they do not, be ready to discover … Continue reading

Discipline and the Special Needs Child: An Act of Love

Even more than average children, the special-needs child requires appropriate discipline. I like to point to the example of Helen Keller, who as a blind and deaf child was initially allowed to roam freely in her house, eating off people’s plates, breaking and throwing things at will. Her amazing transformation into an intellectually gifted adult could not have happened without regulations and order. Without discipline, your child’s world is more frightening, more chaotic, and more challenging. Appropriate discipline is an act of love. The question is, how do we discipline a child with a disability? 1. Know your child’s motivators. … Continue reading

What’s in Your Pile of Papers?

Genealogy is a hobby that tends to generate quite a bit of paperwork. Have you ever forgotten what documents, notes, or photographs you have because you couldn’t find them? It is definitely beneficial to find a way to organize your pile of papers. For me, this all started with a desire to find my birth certificate. I was attempting to begin work on my family tree by starting with myself. This piece of advice has some advantages. After all, most people know when their birthday is, and the year that they were born. Trying to find one’s birth certificate is … Continue reading

Avoiding Summer Sluggishness

Do you allow your kids to skip chore duty during the summer months? That was the topic du jour at a recent “Playdate at the Playground” event I attended with a bunch of other moms I hang out with on a regular basis. Once school let out for the year, slowly structure and routine slid into oblivion. Now, my mom pals say they can’t get their kids motivated to complete the simplest household tasks. Fortunately, my kid is still on track. Of course, she is just six years old and follows her chore chart religiously. I am a huge advocate … Continue reading

End of an Era

My daughter is a visual learner. She thrives on using colorful visual aids to help retain information or to serve as a clear reminder of lessons or events. Hence our success using a reward chart. When my daughter was three years old I invested in a reward chart and promptly hung it in the hallway where no one, especially my young offspring, could miss it. Whereas, some parents use the chart to curb negative behavior, I wanted a visual tool to encourage my daughter to exercise good behavior while completing a list of daily activities. The chart included a list … Continue reading
