Celebrating Accomplishments

Myra Turner reminded us yesterday about remembering to celebrate educational milestones while homeschooling in her article, Celebrating School Rites of Passage. How I neglected to address Kindergarten Graduation when writing my post on Homeschool Graduation, I will never know. After reading the article, I realized that we were letting my daughter slip from elementary school to middle school with absolutely no fanfare. For shame! Not only that, but we did the same to our son two years ago. Needless to say, this weekend will be one of celebration for our family. Since our kids, will both be transitioning to a … Continue reading

Six Months Old

When I first gazed into my daughter’s dark blue eyes, her half birthday seemed like it was very far away. Yet, here we are celebrating my daughter reaching the six month milestone. These past six months have gone by so quickly but in those six months we have enjoyed watching our little baby girl grow and develop into the happy and active baby that she is. At six months she is still very much bald with a small patch of dark hair at the nape of her neck. Her hair is slowly growing in and her peach fuzz is developing … Continue reading

Make It a Memorable Father’s Day

Forget about the striped tie, fishing pole, and Chia Head; rather, give dad something he can cherish for years to come this Father’s Day—-a scrapbook celebrating his life. When it comes to organizing a memory book honoring dad, the possibilities are endless. If this is your first stab at theme scrapbooking, consider going the traditional route with a basic chronological design. With this technique you simply document your father’s life from birth to present day. Your layouts should include childhood photos taken at birthday parties, Christmas, Easter, and other holidays. Also, look for pictures that capture major milestones in his … Continue reading

Homemade Graduation Party Fun

Graduating from middle school, high school or college is a huge deal for many families. Consequently, commencement ceremonies are often followed by massive parties celebrating a graduate’s accomplishments. Fortunately, all the pomp and circumstance doesn’t have to break the bank. With a little creativity you can create these nifty graduation party decorations and dishes for pennies on the dollar: Decorative Diplomas Materials: Sheets of white paper Ribbon (in your school’s colors) Directions: Write the word “diploma” on one end of the paper. Roll sheets of paper into tubes lengthwise, so the longest dimension of the paper is the length of … Continue reading

Celebrate Everything

A lady from my breast cancer support group nominated me for The Inspirational Survivor award for a local breast cancer charity and I got chosen. She had to write a letter telling me why I was an inspiration and she said some wonderful things about me; I paid her a lot to say them, just kidding. The letter mentioned how we had adopted our three kids, how my husband had battled cancer first and then I did and how we were making gift bags for cancer patients as they were completing their treatments. The bags were nothing fancy just a … Continue reading

End of the School Year Celebrations

I am a celebrator. You don’t have to turn another year older, win an Oscar or save a cat from a burning building to get a cake baked in your honor at our home. So it stands to reason that I am planning a huge shindig to celebrate my first grader’s last day of school. Okay, it’s not a huge bash, but we are certainly planning to observe the end of her first year of all-day school with more than just a congratulatory handshake. After all, we can’t leave all the partying to the eighth and 12th graders. I realize … Continue reading

March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day

This year is the 6th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day. The purpose of this day is to promote awareness and understanding of Down Syndrome. It is a day to showcase the talents, abilities, and accomplishments of people who have Down Syndrome. It is a day of celebration! I have only just learned about World Down Syndrome Day. It takes place on the 21st of March every year. The United States would list this date as 3/21, but most other countries will list it as 21/3. This date was selected as World Down Syndrome Day because it represents the 3 … Continue reading

Simple Celebration

Easter is right around the corner, but for some families, so is graduation. Preschool graduation takes place at the end of April at the small Catholic school my daughter attends. Unfortunately, the occasion is not marked with a ton of pomp and circumstance. Rather, the school leaves the celebrating for the parents to handle at home. The school has the same rules for kindergarten. Last year, when my daughter completed half-day kindergarten, it was up to me to come up with a way to celebrate her accomplishment. We had a small party with family and friends. Nothing over the top; … Continue reading

Ideas for Homeschool Graduations

As another school year comes to a close, another group of homeschoolers and their parents draw the homeschooling experience to an end. It is time for homeschool graduation ceremonies. Many homeschoolers prefer to graduate in groups of 10-20 in joint ceremonies with other homeschoolers they have socialized with over the years. Students who participated in Co-ops and other homeschool programs together like to graduate together. Others like to go solo and graduate as an individual. Here are some homeschool graduation ideas for homeschoolers who want to “graduate” individually. Have an Un-Graduation Ceremony: If your homeschoolers were actually unschoolers, living and … Continue reading
