Homeschooling with a toddler

You've homeschooled while pregnant. You've survived it with a newborn. Now, you're ready for the ultimate challenge: homeschooling with a toddler in the house. Seemingly overnight, you realize that what you thought was hard (adding a baby to the homeschool mix) was actually a piece of cake.

In my last post, I talked about planning homeschooling around a pregnancy. But, what happens when the new baby arrives, or possibly two babies arrive and you feel as if you're getting nothing done? You still have math to teach, science experiments to do, and essays to read.

Recently, I posted about meeting, in general, the challenge of teaching various ages. I mentioned that so much comes down to me and to my attitude. When I can remain calm, patient, and flexible, our days are smoother and happier.

My oldest daughter is newly teen-aged. My middle daughter is ten, and my youngest is four. This can make for an interesting day.

It was Andrea's great suggestion that we compare our days side by side. Like she said, many people want to know what a "typical day" looks like. Like Andrea's family, we would also consider ourselves "relaxed".

NO. We seldom take holiday breaks. All of my friend's kids and my kid's friends are home for the holidays. Therefore, there is no schoolwork, no homework, no work, period. This is not true for us. Since we take breaks whenever we need to, we do not follow the public school calendar.

Please, please, please tell me that you regularly, daily encourage your kids to go outside and just play. If I have a pet peeve with the home schooling community this is it. I have met parent upon parent who seems to be convinced that physical education, is secondary to the "real academics.

Anyone who has been homeschooling for awhile can tell you that getting your kids into the mindset of doing school at the kitchen table is tricky.
