Time Again for the Homeschool Portfolio

What is a Homeschool Portfolio? A homeschool portfolio is a window into your child’s homeschool experience, achievements, and academic progress, throughout the school year. There are more then on way to keep a portfolio but I will list the core items you will need. However, always check your state laws, homeschool co-ops, and with the evaluator, on what materials are required. It’s Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas …

I’m the kind of person who likes to listen to the lyrics of songs. And I frequently take them too seriously, and nitpick them to death. I mean, things should make sense, shouldn’t they? One lyric stuck out to me in particular as I was driving out to do some Christmas shopping the other day. We’re all familiar with the song, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas.” In fact, I bet 99% of our readers here on Families.com can sing it from memory. We start out by talking about how everything looks like Christmas. There are trees, and … Continue reading

Stolen Minutes To Find Yourself Again

The homeschooling mom often neglects herself. She is busy trying to maintain a balance of a clean happy home and well educated children. It can be quite a challenge for her to find the time to sit quietly and read a book or get her hair done in the midst of grading a spelling test, folding laundry, making dinner, and setting up a science lab. She seems to run on a force of unending energy until she finally burns out and falls flat on her face. When she finally regains awareness she realizes her nails are broken, her hair is … Continue reading

Overdue Intro From A New SP Blogger

Yes, my introduction is long overdue. As one of the new Single Parenting bloggers, I’ve wanted to say hello to Jacky Gamble who’s another SP blogger, and to everyone here at Families.com, but I’ve been so intently focused on writing informative pieces that this kept slipping my mind. Here I am at last. I’ve been a single parent for about 7 years now. After my second divorce I truly felt it was better to go it alone with my five daughters. It seemed apparent that I hadn’t chosen husbands wisely, so it was high time for me to get out … Continue reading

If I Could Start Over Again, Thoughts from a homeschool veteran

I don’t know If I can really call myself a homeschool veteran just just yet because I have not graduated a homeschooler. I have however, gotten my kids to the high school stage and am continuing to homeschool them. 75% of homeschoolers (my best bet)decide to stop homeschooling by this point. This is not a condemnation, just a fact, as each family must do what is best for them. If I had to do it again, as in start from scratch with a new child in Kindergarten, I would certainly do things differently. There are also some things I would … Continue reading

Yes, Its time to plan for next year again

Every spring, I depress other homeschoolers by beginning my planning for the next year. It might seem a bit early to many, but if you plan on using any outside classes or programs, they are registering now. If you plan to include drama or perhaps and Algebra course into your homeschooling plan, you don’t want to find that the classes are already full when you get to it. Anyway, we are pretty planned out for the year. We are using our usual fine arts program (Now called Artios Academy). Both of my kids are taking the Conservatory program which is … Continue reading

Beginning Homeschooling Again

Many people are deciding to homeschool this year after taking a hiatus and having homeschooling in the past and then putting their kids in school. They may have homeschooled two years ago. They may have homeschooled six years ago. Regardless of past experience, they may have questions as to where to start. This uncertainty is for a good reason. Homeschooling is growing at such and incredible rate that a great many things change from year to year. Each year there are new curriculums, there are new approaches, and there is new technology that a homeschooler can use, so starting again … Continue reading

“Behind” Is a Relative Term in Homeschooling

Has anyone ever been surprised at how “behind” your child seems to be? This has happened to me a few times actually. . .always in reference to my preschool aged children and always in reference to learning how to read. I have mentioned before that we don’t do preschool formally. While I consider reading literature to the children (all of them–even the two year olds) a necessary task on my daily agenda. I don’t consider teaching them their alphabet, teaching them their numbers, or teaching them letter sounds necessary until about age 5 or 6. Sometimes, they just learn them … Continue reading
