Is Your Business A Good Fit For You?

When you start your own business, it is important to do a lot of thinking about many different things. One very important thing that you must consider when you design a business plan for your home-based business is what exactly it is that you really want. This may sound overly simplistic, but it really isn’t if you think about it. How many of us know a friend who got what you (and they) thought was a spectacular job – a job for a prestigious company with a high salary and great benefits? Maybe it wasn’t a friend, maybe it was … Continue reading

A Breakthrough

The clouds parted. Angels began to sing. Little birdies fluttered down from the trees – even though it’s winter – and twittered lovely melodies. What brought all this about? One simple sentence, uttered by my son: “You know what, when I do school with a good attitude, it goes faster and I get all the answers right.” Trails of pixie dust fell from the sky onto my waiting head and I felt myself begin to fly. Years of telling him this exact same thing. Years of saying, “Let’s just do it, and it will be over.” Years of cajoling, enticing, … Continue reading

Meet a Families.com Blogger – Valorie Delp!

Welcome to a new series here in Media Reviews, where we will get to know our Families.com bloggers a little bit better. Our first interview will be with Valorie Delp. Valorie, how long have you blogged for Families.com? I started in June of 2006. What topics do you blog about? Currently–homeschooling, food and baby (or as someone else aptly put it–the breastfeeding blog) What is your favorite thing about blogging for Families.com? There are lots of things I like–but one thing that stands out here vs just a plain old freelance writing job, is the community. You get to know … Continue reading

You Get Teacher Rewards Too

Businesses love to support teachers. Especially businesses whose products might appeal to teachers. Giving them a discount means they’ll come back again, and again, and again. Barnes and Noble, Staples and Lakeshore Learning are just a few in my area that support teachers. . .and homeschoolers. Yep, you read that right. Most businesses that offer teacher rewards do not discriminate against homeschoolers. They are happy to extend their teaching rewards, which generally include 10% off, or a discount after purchasing a certain amount, to homeschoolers. How Do I Know if a Business Offers Discounts to Teachers? Just ask! Some companies, … Continue reading

Is Homeschooling Worth It–Just for Character?

I have said before that despite being a fairly conservative Christian, religion has nothing to do with our homeschool decision. We homeschool because we feel like sending out kids to public school would be educationally neglectful. (Ironic isn’t it?) But there is no doubt that the character traits they pick up from being at home make them some of the most polite children on the block. Although we have not homeschooled solely for the purpose of our children’s character, the outcome and influence is undeniable. I know that many would say that their children attend public school, and their child’s … Continue reading

Are You Trying to Fit a Square Peg in a Round Hole?

I wrote the other day about reading notes from several parents talking about how frustrating homeschooling was and how they were sure. . .this was it. . .that child was going to go back to public school. Some complained of discipline issues that could be seen in all aspects of life, not just homeschooling. Others complained that they couldn’t figure out how to teach their child so their child would get it. And still others complained that it was just plain old fashioned hard. In general, homeschooling has never been difficult for our family. We have bad days as does … Continue reading
