Are You Prepared for an Unexpected Change?by Andrea Hermitt | More from this Blogger 17 Oct 2008 05:52 PM I just read a blog today that talked about changes that occur when a homeschooling mom dies. Being on numerous homeschool email lists, and just being aware of what goes on in homeschooling circles I am well aware that it happens far too often. Not only do homeschool mom's die, but the fathers can also die unexpectedly, or the family can be thrown into an unexpected illness for any member of the family. A tragic change such as this can also change the school situation. In many cases it can mean the end of homeschooling. If you do not want your children's whole life to change should something unexpected happen in your family, you need to make arrangements in advance. In our case, we have insurance that will allow my husband to hire tutors should something happen to me. Should something happen to my husband, we also have enough insurance to pay for the home and keep us going for several years so I can pull myself together and allow the kids to continue learning in freedom. The guardians we have chosen for the children in the event something happens to both of us are equipped to continue the children's education in a way that would at least resemble homeschooling. If you really want to plan ahead, you should spend some time reading up on the story of the Robinson family and how the mother had planned out an entire K-12 curriculum that the family followed after she passed away. The same Robinson Curriculum is actually used by may homeschooling families today. *Have a question about homeschooling? Just ask. * Have you seen the homeschooling curriculum glossary? While we are covered (financially, at least) if something happens to dh, if something should happen to me, I'm not sure how well dh would manage. And the children's guardians if something happens to us both likely would not be willing to hs - although, as I think about it, our life insurance should more than cover tutors, etc. Anyway, thanks for the thought-provoking article!
