Are the Grandparents Supportive?

We had a family gathering today, and were blessed to have two grandmas and one grandpa in attendance. One grandma asked my son, “How’s school? What’s your favorite class?” My son replied, “Well, we homeschool.” She replied, “Yes, but you still have classes. Which one do you like best?” This launched into a discussion of math – who knew that I’d have a child who liked math – and the conversation was very positive and upbeat. Not every conversation with a grandparent will go so smoothly, though. I feel very blessed that my parents and my husband’s parents have been … Continue reading

When Family and Friends Are Not Supportive

Last week, I wrote a blog about when a partner is not supportive during pregnancy. Today, I read in our forums that one of our members is having problems with family and friends not being supportive, so I decided to address that issue separately. Sometimes it helps to keep in mind that family and friends always seem to have something to say. It starts almost as soon as you meet someone and it starts looking serious. Then they want to know when you are getting engaged. Eventually, you get engaged and they want to know when you will get married. … Continue reading

Grandparent-Single Parent Relations, Part Three—Step-Grandparents

As I have been writing about the unique challenges and joys that grandparents bring to the single parent family, I thought it only fitting that I write a bit about step-grandparents. It seems almost inevitable that at least one side of our children’s parentage will re-partners and there could very well be new grandparents that come into the family mix. Some older adults take to grandparenting with ease and gusto, regardless of whether or not the children are related to them biologically or not. Other step grandparents can be more challenging and be less than loving to our children… There … Continue reading

Family & Marriage: Grandparents Day

Today is Grandparent’s Day, a day that we pay honor to the parents of our parents and those that mean so much to us. When my daughter heard that was what today was, she great very excited and wanted to make a card and get presents for each of her grandmothers. I listened to her exciting chatter and my husband and I both had to smile. Of the two of us, he has two grandparents still living – his grandmother on his father’s side and his grandfather on his mother’s side. His grandfather celebrates his 96th birthday this November. My … Continue reading

Interviews with Homeschoolers – Danyelle Leafty

I love talking to other homeschoolers and finding out why they chose to homeschool and how it works for them. Today I’m joined by Danyelle Leafty. Danyelle, thanks for letting me pick your brain! First off, I’d like to know, why did you decide to homeschool? I decided to homeschool because my son learns very quickly. I wanted his education to be paced with his ability which would be impossible in a traditional school setting. A single teacher can only do so much. I also wanted him to retain his love of learning. He has been asking questions ever since … Continue reading

The Quarter, Part 2

Be sure to read Part 1 of the story. We went from radiology back to the triage area. Then the nurse put Jessie in a bed. After examining Jessie the doctor decided that it would be best for her to go to Children’s Dallas. When I brought up that I had wanted to go to Children’s first, the nurses told us that it we did the right thing going to the closer hospital. It would have been easy for us to leave the hospital and head out for Children’s. We were halfway there already. The reason the doctor was sending … Continue reading

Sleeping In

Today I answered the door in my pyjamas. It was 11 am. This is not unusual for me. First, I work at home. Secondly, many days we homeschool. Some days we do not leave the house very early and I like it that way. My daughter also likes to sleep in. She’s gradually recovering from the flu and she needs a lot of sleep these days. Or perhaps she’s growing. We also get to bed somewhat late. Whatever the reason, sometimes she sleeps in and I like that too. I work, she sleeps, life is good. If we had to … Continue reading

Life Lessons

Some days, you just don’t feel like you’re getting anything done. This problem is particularly pronounced around this season, I find, since it is possible to run around like crazy and still have a lot of to-dos on your plate. You’re getting things done, but there are more things to do than there is time to accomplish them all. There are also the days like today, when the weather is snaining (that’s snow mixed with rain) and you just don’t feel like accomplishing anything. It’s dark and cold, and did I mention that snain? Yuck. Cabin fever sets in and … Continue reading

Interview With MTV’s Teen Mom – Amber

Friday afternoon I had the pleasure of talking with Amber from MTV’s Teen Mom. Before I even got to the second question, I realized, it doesn’t even sound like I am talking to a teen. Amber has learned a lot as a teen mom, she says, and it was apparent as she discussed the challenges and joys of becoming a parent. Along with growing responsibilities, she has become more mature. Things have changed a lot, but as Amber said, “it’s a good way of change.” We talked about how she would have done things differently if given the chance, and … Continue reading

Book Review: Adoption is a Family Affair–What Family and Friends Must Know

Prolific adoption writer Patricia Irwin Johnston is herself an adoptive parent of three. Her husband and sister-in-law were also adopted. Pat has been a writer, speaker, educator and advocate on adoption topics for nearly 20 years. While moderating an internet support group for waiting parents, she found many prospective adoptive parents reporting insensitive comments and myths about adoption that they were hearing from family members. Many waiting parents also noted that people didn’t seem to know what to say when they announced that they were adopting, and that before and after the baby arrived they didn’t have the traditional supportive … Continue reading
