An Unusual Homeschool Day

As you read this, my kids and I will be across town (from where we live) taking entrance exams for their homeschool program for next year. The program consists of History and Fine Arts on Mondays and all other Academics on Thursdays. They have done the Monday program for several years.

We take very few tests in our homeschool. Each year we take the CAT, (either a practice test or real thing depending on what is required). We also do a few verbal tests and the occasional math exam, but generally, no one but us sees the results.

I am pleased to announce that the kids are not nervous and neither am I. Since I know what curriculum my kids are taking next year at the program, I was able to find online placement tests for the curriculum. Because there is a chance that the same test can be used I did not go over the tests with the kids. Instead, I looked at the most difficult questions and from my knowledge of what I know they know, they will do just fine.

On days like this (which do not happen too often), I have to go back to my old public school mindset as I prepare them for what is probably a stressful day for them. I sent them to bed on time, and will wake them up bright and early to ensure they have had enough sleep. (I wrote this last night) I will feed them a well-balanced nutritious breakfast. I will try to leave in plenty of time so that our commute is enjoyable and stress free. I am sure it will go well. I just have to convince the kids that all will go well too. The most important thing is that they are confident and relaxed. That is what I believe will show on the test papers more than, or just as much as their actual academic ability.
